Chapter 10 - The Blackout and the Vanishing Act

The brilliant afternoon sunlight streaming through the large living room windows vanished in a microsecond, replaced by an oppressive, suffocating gloom as the emergency grid shutdown cut power to the high-rise's automated smart-glass window tinting. The room plunged into a deep, bruised gray twilight.
"Stay calm! Keep your positions!" Agent Sterling’s voice cut sharply through the sudden darkness, followed immediately by the harsh click of a tactical flashlight beam slicing across the room.
The white LED beam swept across the living room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, the splintered remains of the front door, and the empty space where Eleanor Vance had been standing just a second before.
The silver-haired architect of ruin was gone.
"She's out the door!" one of the tactical agents shouted, rushing toward the shattered entryway into the dark, echoing hallway.
"Don't lose her!" Agent Sterling ordered, sweeping her flashlight beam toward the kitchen where Martha and Page cowered near the refrigerator. "Everyone stay down! Do not move!"
Chloe stood frozen in the center of the living room, her heart hammering against her ribs. The air felt thin, heavy with the scent of ozone and dust. She reached into her jacket pocket, her fingers brushing against her father's letter, but as she did, she heard a soft, metallic scrape coming from the dark corner near the large windows.
"Dad?" Chloe whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming dread.
She spun around, sprinting across the room toward the sofa. She dropped to her knees in the dark, her hands frantically feeling the cushions.
The sofa was empty.
Arthur wasn't there.
"Mom!" Chloe screamed, panic tearing through her chest with the force of a physical blow. "Mom, where's Dad? Where is he?!"
Martha scrambled across the hardwood floor toward the flashlight beam, her face twisted in utter incomprehension. "He was right here! I just saw him! The paramedics—they didn't arrive yet, did they?"
Page let out a hysterical shriek from the dark corner by the window. "Look! The window!"
Agent Sterling pivoted, flashing her light toward the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city skyline. One of the massive glass panes—designed as a heavy, reinforced emergency exit panel—was swung outward on its heavy hydraulic hinge, opening directly onto the howling wind of the high-rise exterior. Standing right at the open ledge, framed by the swirling clouds of the darkening sky far below, was a tall figure in a green sweater, being guided outward by a man in a tactical balaclava.
"Dad!" Chloe bolted across the room, lunging forward with desperate speed.
She threw her hands out, her fingers grazing the hem of Arthur’s green sweater just as the man in the balaclava pulled him through the open window onto the narrow maintenance catwalk outside.
"Let him go!" Chloe screamed, grabbing the metal frame of the window and leaning out into the terrifying, windy abyss.
Far below, the city lights flickered like distant stars through the gathering storm clouds. On the narrow maintenance balcony three feet below the open window, Arthur stood dazed, leaning heavily against the railing, while Eleanor Vance stood beside him, holding his arm with a chilling, gentle grip.
"Don't do anything foolish, Miss Davis," Eleanor’s voice drifted up clearly over the howling wind, echoing off the concrete facade of the building. "Your father has graciously agreed to accompany us to a private medical facility where his treatments will be fully funded. Provided, of course, that you reconsider my offer regarding the confession."
Agent Sterling reached the window beside Chloe, raising her weapon, but the howling wind and the sheer angle of the drop made a clean shot impossible. "Drop your weapon and step away from the ledge!" Sterling commanded into the megaphone of her tactical radio.
Eleanor smiled up from the catwalk, her silver hair whipping wildly in the wind. She calmly reached into her coat, pulled out a small, encrypted burner phone, and tossed it upward through the open window.
The phone landed squarely on the living room rug beside Chloe’s feet.
"You have until midnight to sign the confession and upload it to the secure server link on that device, Miss Davis," Eleanor called out over the wind. "If you fail, your father receives his next dose of cardiac medication in a very different kind of room."
Before Agent Sterling could fire a warning shot, the emergency fire escape ladder beside the catwalk dropped with a loud, metallic clatter, sliding down into the dark abyss below as Eleanor, Arthur, and their captors vanished into the swirling storm.

Chloe stood frozen at the ledge, the wind whipping her hair across her face. She looked down at the burner phone lying on the rug, its screen flashing a single, blinking countdown timer: 11:59:59.
