Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Colonel Thorne

The federal military police escort marched Captain Henderson and the two hesitating MPs out of the office, their heavy boots echoing rhythmically down the crimson-lit hallway. Master Sergeant Reynolds remained behind, standing stiffly at attention before Colonel Vance and Major General Davies. His uniform was immaculate, bearing the ribbons of multiple combat tours, and his expression was grim.

"The IG team has secured the communications hub and the finance office, ma'am," Reynolds reported crisply. "We intercepted a secure transmission attempting to wipe the central payroll databases, but our cyber team locked them out just in time."

Vance nodded slowly, sliding her tactical tablet into her briefcase. "What about the base commander, Sergeant? Has Colonel Thorne been contained?"

Reynolds hesitated for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of unease crossing his weathered face. "That’s the complication, Colonel. When our tactical teams moved on Thorne’s quarters three minutes ago, the house was empty. His vehicle is still parked in the driveway with the engine warm, but there’s no sign of him."

Davies frowned, slamming his fist onto the edge of the desk. "He’s bolted. He must have a secondary escape route built into the base infrastructure."

"Not just an escape route, sir," Reynolds corrected, pulling a folded schematic from his cargo pocket and laying it flat across the mahogany desk. He traced a finger along a series of underground blueprints marked with classified red ink. "During the Cold War, this base was a primary staging depot. There’s a network of decommissioned underground fuel pipelines and maintenance tunnels that connect the central garrison directly to the old munitions bunkers out in Sector Four."

Vance leaned over the map, her eyes tracking the precise lines of the subterranean network. "Which means Thorne isn't trying to flee the base entirely. He’s heading for the unrecorded armory in Sector Four to secure his leverage."

"Leverage being the illegal weapon caches," Davies added, rubbing his chin. "If he gets his hands on those heavy ordnance crates, he can barricade himself in the bunkers and hold out against a siege until his political allies in Washington apply enough pressure to force a negotiated retreat."

Vance straightened up, her posture rigid with absolute resolve. "We can't let him reach the bunkers. Reynolds, assemble a quick-reaction squad with night-vision gear and cut off the northern tunnel exit. Miller, you stay here with General Davies and secure the digital backups."

"Ma'am, with all due respect," Miller piped up, stepping forward with a fierce determination in his wide eyes. "I know those drainage systems better than anyone. I helped clear the debris down there during last month’s engineering detail. You need someone who knows where the dead ends are."

Vance looked at the young private, seeing past his initial shock in the cafeteria to the steady courage currently taking root in his chest. She gave a single, sharp nod. "Grab a rifle and a tactical vest, private. You're coming with us."
