Chapter 7 - The Crimson Alarm

The crimson glow of the emergency lights painted long, twisting shadows across the walls of the headquarters office. The base-wide alarm shrieked continuously, a mechanical wail that signaled an immediate security lockdown. Captain Henderson froze, his hand still outstretched toward Vance’s desk, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy oak door as heavy boots began to stampede down the hallway outside.

"What did you trigger, Vance?" Henderson demanded, his professional veneer cracking completely as panic bled into his voice. "Did you call in an outside extraction?"

"I didn't call anyone, Captain," Vance said, rising slowly from her chair. Her silver eagle insignia caught the red light, casting a glint of steel across the room. "I simply set a dead-man’s switch on the Inspector General's server. When the local network jammer was activated a few moments ago, the system interpreted it as an active cyber-attack on a senior intelligence officer and automatically initiated a high-priority threat response."

Major General Davies crossed his arms, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "That means the quick-reaction force from the regional infantry division is already airborne, Henderson. You and Thorne have about twenty minutes before federal investigators land on this tarmac with a battalion of paratroopers."

Henderson’s face drained of all color. He realized the trap had closed not just on Tyler, but on the entire chain of command. He looked back at the two MPs, whose weapons were now wavering slightly as the panic of the situation overwhelmed their discipline.

"Don't listen to them!" Henderson snarled, drawing his sidearm from its holster with a sharp rasp of leather. "They're staging a coup! We take them into custody right now, or we all hang!"

The two MPs hesitated, caught between the direct orders of an officer holding a weapon and the terrifying realization of what the red alarm meant. Private Miller suddenly burst out from the adjoining side room, holding a heavy steel fire extinguisher he had unhooked from the wall. Before Henderson could level his pistol toward Vance, Miller swung the heavy cylinder with all his might, catching Henderson square in the forearm.

The pistol flew from Henderson’s hand, clattering loudly against the metal leg of the desk before skittering across the floor. Henderson screamed in pain, clutching his bruised wrist as he stumbled backward against the filing cabinet.

"Nobody move!" a deep voice boomed from the open doorway.

They all whipped their heads toward the threshold. Standing there with his rifle raised and locked was Master Sergeant Reynolds, the senior enlisted advisor to the base inspector general, flanked by four heavily armored military policemen wearing federal insignia. Reynolds’s eyes scanned the room, locking instantly onto Henderson’s bruised arm and the pistol on the floor.

"Captain Henderson," Reynolds said coldly, stepping into the red light. "You are under arrest for treason, conspiracy, and illegal arms trafficking."
