Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

The phone felt like a hot coal in Nora’s palm. She stared at the five words, her breath shallow and rapid. The timestamp read 11:42 PM.

*I hear my girl is waiting.*

Evelyn had already done it. Even before coming to the porch to stage her theatrical confrontation, she had pulled the pin on the grenade and thrown it straight into Nora’s life. It was retaliation, calculated and vicious. Evelyn knew that Caleb was the one terror Nora could not outwork, outpay, or outsmart.

Nora's instincts took over. Survival mode, honed through years of poverty and nursing underfunded emergency rooms, cleared the fog of terror from her brain. She took a screenshot of the text message, emailed it to a secure, encrypted drive, and immediately deleted the conversation thread from her phone.

She didn't sleep. Instead, Nora dragged a battered metal lockbox from beneath her bed and dumped its contents across the kitchen table.

Passports. Abby’s birth certificate—which had no father listed on the vital records. The deed to her mother’s home. And her father’s personal leather-bound ledger.

Nora opened the ledger to the final entries written in her father’s shaky, cancer-ravaged handwriting from three years ago. She had never read the personal diary entries before; the grief had been too raw. She had only looked at the legal documents tucked into the back flap.

Now, she flipped through the yellowed pages.

*November 14:* Evelyn found the Ohio address. She threatened to call Caleb's people unless I signed over the secondary savings account to Richard. I gave him the money. God forgive me, I am feeding wolves to save my lamb.

*December 2:*

*Caleb reached out to Evelyn last week. He sent five thousand cash to our post office box. He thinks the money gives him a claim. Evelyn took it and bought herself new jewelry. She doesn't realize what Caleb is. If I die before Nora is safe, the monster will come to the door.*

*December 19:*

*Transferred full title of the house to Nora today. Tucked the original bank transfer receipts showing Evelyn taking Caleb’s bribes into the safety deposit box at First National. If Evelyn ever tries to blackmail my girl, use the receipts. The money was wired through Caleb's club account—interstate money laundering. The feds will pick her up within forty-eight hours.*

Nora stared at the page, a chilling laugh bubbling up from her throat. Her father hadn't just protected her; he had left behind a loaded gun.

Evelyn hadn't just betrayed her daughter tonight. She had been taking hush money from a violent felon for over three years, using Abby as an unspoken bargaining chip.

Suddenly, the floorboards in the hallway creaked.

Nora snapped the ledger shut and shoved it under a stack of papers. She turned around, expecting to see Abby awake from a nightmare.

Instead, through the sheer curtains of the kitchen window facing the dark alleyway behind her garage, a tall, heavy silhouette stood motionless near the shadows of the fence, the red cherry of a lit cigarette glowing brightly in the dark.
