Chapter 11 - The Confession on Tape

Evelyn stared at the blood-speckled phone on the diner table, her mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water. The realization of what lay behind Jax’s words hit her with the force of an oncoming freight train. The arrogance that had fueled her for decades withered into pure, sickening panic.
"You... you killed him?" Richard choked out, pressing his spine so hard against the wall it felt like his ribs might crack. "Oh God... oh God, Mom, what did you get us into?"
"Shut up, Richard!" Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest as her breathing turned ragged. She looked at Jax, trying desperately to summon the haughty indignation that had always cowed her husband and daughter. "You can't threaten us! We are citizens! We will go to the police! We'll tell them you murdered Caleb!"
Jax leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. He didn't blink. His presence was suffocating, sucking all the air out of the booth.
"Go ahead, Evelyn," Jax said with a quiet, terrifying smile. "Walk into the township precinct. Tell the detectives that you hired an interstate felon to kidnap your seven-year-old granddaughter so you could extort your daughter out of a residential property deed."
Richard let out a pathetic whimper, burying his face in his hands.
"You don't have proof of that," Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. "It's your word against mine! No court will believe a gang of biker criminals over a grieving widow!"
Jax tapped the scarred wooden table twice with his silver ring.
From the booth behind them, a man in a plain charcoal suit stood up, carrying a leather notebook and an audio recorder. He wore a silver badge clipped to his breast pocket—State Police Special Investigations.
"Actually, Mrs. Vance," the investigator said, stepping into the aisle beside Jax's enforcers. "We have twenty-six hours of continuous wiretap surveillance authorized under a federal racketeering warrant. We have your phone calls with Caleb from November. We have your bank deposit slips showing cash disbursements from club shell accounts. And we have the digital recording from inside your daughter's home last night when you threatened her."
Evelyn’s face turned gray. Her hands lost their grip on her purse, letting it tumble heavily to the linoleum floor, spilling cheap cosmetics and crumpled tissues across the tiles.
"Richard Vance, Evelyn Vance," the investigator continued, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping, interstate extortion, and accessory to money laundering."
"No! No, please!" Richard cried out, bursting into frantic, humiliating tears as an officer grabbed him by the collar and dragged him out of the booth. "It was her idea! She made me drive the car! She told me Nora would cave! It wasn't me! I love my niece! I love Abby!"
Evelyn didn't cry. She sat frozen, her eyes locking onto Jax with pure, impotent malice as the cold steel bracelets snapped tightly around her frail, wrinkled wrists.
"Where is she?" Evelyn spat, her voice raspy and venomous. "Where did you take my daughter?"

Jax stood up, towering over the broken matriarch. "Somewhere you will never be allowed to cast a shadow again."
