Chapter 1

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the azure expanse of the Pacific Ocean, casting a blinding glare through the reinforced portholes of the USS Vanguard mess hall. The air hummed with the familiar, low-frequency drone of massive diesel engines and the ambient chatter of off-duty sailors grabbing a quick bite before their next watch. At a corner table beneath a flickering fluorescent light fixture sat Commander Eleanor Vance. Her crisp white naval officer uniform was immaculate, the gold shoulder boards catching the harsh light, and her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight, regulation bun. On the tray before her rested a modest lunch, anchored by a single roasted chicken drumstick.

The heavy atmosphere shifted instantly when three enlisted men approached her table with an air of careless entitlement. Jake, a dark-haired sailor wearing aviator wings and a provocative grin, leaned over the back of her chair.

"Mind if we sit with you, Commander?" Jake laughed, his voice cutting through the ambient noise of the room.

Before Eleanor could reply, Jake slid into the bench opposite her, reached across the stainless-steel tray, and snatched the chicken drumstick. He took a bold, messy bite directly over her pristine plate, crumbs scattering across her tray.

Eleanor did not flinch. Her breathing remained measured and shallow, her eyes locking onto Jake with a cold, terrifying stillness. She maintained absolute emotional restraint, letting the silence stretch for a heartbeat.

"Put it down," Eleanor said, her voice a low, controlled whisper that carried an unmistakable weight of command.

Jake chuckled, unfazed by the warning, and held the half-eaten poultry up. With a careless flick of his wrist, he dropped the drumstick straight onto the blue linoleum floor. A dark splash of barbecue sauce splattered across the polished tiles, staining the deck.

Beside Jake, the second sailor—a curly-haired blonde named Toby—froze. Toby’s eyes widened with sudden, palpable tension. He recognized the look in Eleanor’s eyes.

"Jake, stop. Right now," Toby urged, his voice tight with sudden panic, realizing that crossing Commander Vance was a grave mistake that would ripple far beyond this mess hall.
