Chapter 6

The heavy front doorbell chimed through the quiet house, cutting sharply through the lingering tension like a physical blow. Clara did not flinch at the sound, but inside the kitchen, Leo and Maya froze in absolute horror. Marcus stood on the porch, his breath pluming in the cold night air, his silhouette clearly visible through the frosted glass of the front door. Clara finally rose from her chair, her movements slow and deliberate. She smoothed down her sweater, picked up her coat, and walked toward the entryway with an air of quiet dignity that made Leo and Maya feel utterly small. She did not look back at them as she unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open to welcome her brother into the warmth of the hallway.

Marcus stepped inside, shedding his snow-dusted jacket while casting a sharp, protective glance toward his sister. He had received Clara’s cryptic text message—a simple request to pick her up immediately—and the tone had set off alarm bells in his mind. Marcus was not a man known for his patience, especially when it came to his family. He looked past Clara, locking eyes with Leo and Maya, who had emerged hesitantly from the kitchen. The atmosphere in the hallway was thick enough to cut with a knife. "What’s going on here?" Marcus demanded, his voice low, steady, and dangerously cold as he stepped further into the foyer, positioning himself protectively beside his sister.

Leo swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper, struggling to find the right words to explain the unexplainable. How could he possibly summarize the frantic panic, the false accusation, and the lingering residue of parental paranoia without sounding like a monster? Maya stepped forward, her face pale, desperately trying to intercept before Leo could dig an even deeper hole. "Marcus, it’s just a misunderstanding," Maya began, her voice trembling slightly as she bounced the sleeping infant in her arms. Marcus scoffed, a harsh, dismissive sound that echoed off the wooden walls. "A misunderstanding doesn't make my sister look like she’s been sitting through an interrogation," he retorted sharply, taking another step forward. The fragile peace of the neighborhood had officially shattered, replaced by the raw, volatile reality of a confrontation that had been brewing beneath the surface all evening.
