Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs Shut

Time seemed to fracture into razor-sharp shards as the creature hung suspended above them, its pale, blistered skin slick with condensation and dark fluid. Officer Ramirez reacted with instantaneous, tactical precision, raising his weapon and firing three rapid rounds upward into the stairwell ceiling. The deafening cracks of the gunshots shook the concrete walls, sending chips of masonry and plaster raining down like hail.
The creature shrieked—a high-pitched, harmonic frequency that vibrated inside their skulls, causing Eleanor to drop to her knees with a sharp gasp of pain, clutching her hands over her ears. With an agile, terrifying leap, the entity vaulted past them into the upper stairwell, its claws scraping screechingly against the metal railing before disappearing into the darkness toward the fourth-floor control room.
“Move, move, move!” Arthur barked, his voice cutting through the ringing in Eleanor’s ears as he hauled her up by her arm with surprising strength.
They scrambled up the remaining flight of concrete steps, their boots sliding slightly on the debris, until they slammed through the heavy door leading to the fourth-floor central control annex. Arthur immediately kicked a heavy wedge of iron into the door track, jamming the mechanism shut from the inside just as a heavy, muffled impact slammed against the exterior steel.
The control room was a cavernous space dominated by a semicircular array of glowing monitor banks and master override consoles. Most of the screens flickered with static or error codes, casting strobing patterns of blue and red light across the room. In the center of the console stood the master biometric terminal—the very terminal Eleanor needed to initiate the final facility-wide containment protocol.
Eleanor rushed to the console, her fingers flying across the cold glass touch-pad. “The system is locked out at the kernel level,” she panted, her voice trembling as she read the scrolling error logs. “Someone from outside—or a secondary terminal—has overridden my administrative credentials. We’re locked out of the purge sequence.”
Arthur stepped up beside her, staring at the flashing red prompt on the main monitor. A security feed in the corner showed an empty exterior courtyard, rain slicking the pavement beneath the heavy perimeter gates.
“It wasn’t a remote lockout,” Arthur said quietly, pointing a steady finger at a blinking data node on the peripheral diagnostic screen. “Look at the local network traffic. The signal isn't coming from outside the building. It’s originating from the sub-basement quarantine vault.”
Ramirez stood guard by the heavy reinforced door, his weapon trained on the reinforced glass observation port that looked out over the fourth-floor hallway. “Sir, if someone is down in the sub-basement operating the secondary console, they’re right in the middle of the hot zone.”
Eleanor stared at the blinking node, a sudden, horrifying realization dawning upon her as she recognized the specific user ID attached to the sub-basement terminal login.
“That’s impossible,” Eleanor whispered, her face turning pale as she read the name displayed on the terminal screen. “That ID… that belongs to Dr. Marcus. But he was inside Ward Seven when the containment breach happened.”

Before either Arthur or Ramirez could respond, every single monitor in the control room simultaneously went pitch black. A single line of text typed itself across the central master screen in glowing green letters: WELCOME HOME, ELEANOR. WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
