Chapter 1 - The Authority Breach

The sterile hum of the fluorescent lights overhead did little to warm the frigid atmosphere of the hospital corridor. Dr. Eleanor Vance stood rigidly, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate knot that mirrored her uncompromising demeanor. She adjusted the cuffs of her dark red long-sleeve dress, her eyes fixed with icy fury upon Arthur Sterling. Arthur, a towering man of sixty-five with a shock of stark white hair and a heavy brown jacket, returned her glare with a look of absolute stone. Behind Arthur stood Officer Ramirez, a thirty-five-year-old Hispanic police officer whose uniform was crisp and posture unyielding. A stainless-steel table stood between them, holding a police badge wallet and a nameplate that awkwardly read "oiter."
Eleanor pointed a trembling yet authoritative finger directly at Arthur's chest, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
“Get him out!” she hissed, the command dripping with venom and administrative absolute.
Arthur did not blink. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, ignoring the hospital administrator completely. With calculated precision, he reached into his jacket, pulled out the worn leather badge wallet, and placed it heavily down on the steel table next to the crooked nameplate. The metal clinked sharply against the cold surface, echoing down the empty hallway.
Eleanor’s expression tightened into a mask of pure defiance as she stepped closer, crossing her arms to emphasize her institutional dominance.
“I am in charge,” she snapped, her voice rising slightly, vibrating with repressed fury. “This facility answers to the board of directors, not the county, and certainly not to men who barge in wearing field jackets.”
Arthur stared down at the table, his hand resting heavily on the leather wallet. When he finally looked up, his eyes held a terrifying, dead calm.
“This is a military quarantine,” he said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying weight of federal jurisdiction.
Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her skin chalk-white. Her eyes went wide with sudden, unadulterated panic, and she stumbled backward until her spine hit the reinforced glass doors of Ward Seven. The psychological tension in the corridor snapped tight like a violin string pulled past its breaking point.
Breathless, her chest heaving beneath her dark red dress, Eleanor gasped, “Oh!”
Arthur leaned in closer, his voice a low whisper that promised catastrophic consequences.

“You didn’t just breach a containment zone, Doctor,” Arthur murmured coldly. “You let something out.”
