Chapter 11

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, dark smile crept across his face as he picked up a heavy bronze boat hook from the deck rack, holding it loosely in his right hand like a walking stick.

“You think you’ve won something tonight, Elena?” Julian asked, his voice echoing off the waterlogged pilings of the boathouse slip. “You think locking my mother away and burning a few ledgers changes the fundamental reality of who we are? The Vance family name wasn't built on charity work and clean hands. It was built on survival, on elimination, on making sure that anyone standing in the path of progress was swept out of the way.”

“Like Leo and Lucas?” Elena’s voice was as cold and sharp as an icicle, every word dripping with a lifetime of compressed agony. “Were two six-year-old boys standing in the path of your corporate expansion, Julian?”

“They were liabilities,” Julian said flatly, without a shred of remorse or hesitation. “My mother saw the opportunity first. The experimental pediatric trials were failing regulatory compliance in Zurich. We needed human subjects with matching genetic markers to fast-track the toxicity reports before the SEC audit hit our balance sheets. You and I were too protective. We never would have consented. So she did what any true matriarch would do to protect the family legacy. She administered the treatment under the guise of flu medication.”

Agent Vance stepped out from the drainage pit behind Elena, his service weapon raised and locked on Julian’s chest. “Drop the boat hook, Mr. Vance. You’re under arrest for conspiracy, international trafficking, and the premeditated murder of two minors.”

Julian looked at the pistol barrel pointing directly at his heart, then shifted his gaze back to Elena. He didn't drop the boat hook. In fact, his fingers tightened around the varnished wooden handle.

“You’re too late, Agent,” Julian murmured, his eyes glittering with a manic, dangerous light. “The high tide lock has already cycled. Look outside the slip.”

Elena glanced past the yacht toward the open bay doors of the boathouse. The heavy steel storm barrier separating the private slip from the main river was slowly grinding upward, driven by an automated timer. Beyond the barrier, the dark, turbulent waters of the freezing river rushed past in a swollen, black torrent, completely unobstructed by coast guard patrols.

“The blockade hasn't cleared the channel yet!” Vance shouted, stepping forward onto the teak deck. “Drop the weapon or I will open fire!”

Julian didn't wait. With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, he swung the heavy bronze boat hook in a wide, vicious arc directly toward Agent Vance’s head, knocking the weapon from the agent’s hand with a sharp metallic clatter that sent the pistol skittering across the wet deck and splashing into the dark river below.
