The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Pacific in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The tea cups had long since been cleared away, and Eleanor had caught the afternoon bus back to the city, leaving behind no threats, no contracts, and no chains—only an old woman beginning the long, quiet process of redemption.
David and Mei stood together on the front porch of their weathered cottage, wrapped in a shared wool blanket as the evening breeze swept in from the sea. Inside, Leo was fast asleep in his crib, breathing softly, entirely unaware of the vast, turbulent empire his parents had walked away from to give him something infinitely more precious: a real life.
Mei rested her head against David’s shoulder, her fingers interlaced securely with his. The memory of that stifling dining room—the heavy silver, the stern glares, the silent judgment, and the terrifying weight of porcelain plates—felt like a lifetime ago, a distant nightmare watched on a screen before the projector finally clicked off.
"Do you ever miss it?" David whispered, his breath warm against her temple as he looked out over the endless expanse of the dark, beautiful ocean.
Mei smiled, turning her face to press a gentle kiss against his jaw. She looked down at her hands—free of rings that felt like shackles, strong and steady against the cool night air.
