Chapter 12

Life in the coastal town settled into a rhythm that felt almost miraculous in its ordinary beauty. Mornings began not with the silent, suffocating tension of formal dining halls and waiting servants, but with the smell of brewing coffee, the gentle patter of rain against the windowpane, and the soft cooing of Leo waking up in his crib. David had set up a small home office in the corner of the cottage, where he was beginning to rebuild his independent design consultancy from scratch, taking on local architectural projects that actually mattered to the community.

Mei had found a part-time position at the local maritime museum, cataloging historical artifacts and maritime maps dating back to the town’s founding days. It was work that engaged her brilliant mind without demanding the performative perfection that the Chen family had relentlessly extracted from her.

One crisp afternoon, as Mei walked home from the museum along the pebble-strewn shore with Leo strapped securely against her chest in a comfortable canvas carrier, she saw David waiting for her by the wooden pier. He was holding a small wooden rattle he had carved himself during his lunch break.

As she approached, David smiled, stepping forward to gently kiss her forehead before reaching down to tickle Leo’s tiny chin. The baby giggled, a bright, bubbly sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of their past.

"You look happy," David said, taking her hand as they began the short walk back toward their weathered cottage.

"I am," Mei replied sincerely, squeezing his fingers. "I was just thinking about that night—how trapped we felt in that grand dining room, holding those plates like we were carrying the weight of the world."

David chuckled softly, shaking his head. "We were carrying the weight of their world. But we dropped it."

"And we found ours," Mei added, looking up at the wide, open sky above the Pacific, where a break in the clouds was letting golden shafts of sunlight spill across the water.
