Chapter 7: The Breakfast Table

The morning sun cast long, golden rays across the marble floor of the grand dining room, illuminating the spot where the porcelain plate had shattered the night before. Mrs. Gable and two junior housemaids had scrubbed the marble until it gleamed like new, leaving no physical trace of the humiliation that had transpired less than twelve hours earlier. Yet the psychological atmosphere of the estate had shifted irrevocably.
When Sarah and Noah descended the grand staircase at eight o'clock, dressed in crisp, clean morning attire, the silence in the hallways was deafening. They walked into the dining room not as hidden guests or tolerated outsiders, but with the quiet confidence of rightful owners. Noah held his mother’s hand tightly, his eyes wide as he looked around the expansive room where he had been brought to his knees the evening before.
Victoria Sterling was already seated at the head of the long mahogany table, nursing a cup of black coffee. Her black blazer was replaced by an equally severe charcoal cardigan, her silver updo as immaculate as ever. Arthur sat to her right, staring miserably into his plate of scrambled eggs, avoiding eye contact with anyone.
Without hesitation, Sarah walked directly to the head of the table—opposite Victoria—and pulled out the chair customarily reserved for the head of the household. She seated Noah in the adjacent chair, motioning for Mrs. Gable, who stood anxiously near the pantry entrance, to bring out a fresh breakfast service for them.
"Good morning, Victoria. Good morning, Arthur," Sarah said, her voice calm and measured, carrying across the silent room with effortless authority.
Victoria did not look up from her coffee cup immediately. She took a slow, deliberate sip, letting the tension build before finally raising her piercing eyes to meet Sarah’s gaze. The hostility radiating from the elderly woman was palpable, but beneath it lay a profound, reluctant acknowledgment of defeat. She knew what Harrison Vance had told her the night before; she knew the legal boundaries within which she was now trapped.
"You are sitting in the wrong seat, Sarah," Victoria said quietly, her voice cold as ice. "That place has belonged to the head of this family for three generations."
"Times change, Victoria," Sarah replied smoothly, picking up her linen napkin and spreading it across her lap. "And as we established last night, ownership structures change as well. Noah is hungry. Please ensure Mrs. Gable brings him some fresh fruit and pastries. We have a busy schedule today; I have scheduled a morning meeting with the corporate board of directors to introduce the new primary trustee."

Arthur dropped his fork with a sharp clatter against his porcelain plate, his face turning pale with horror. "The board? Sarah, you can't be serious. You can't just call a board meeting without consulting the executive committee. It will cause a panic among the investors. The stock will plummet before the opening bell!"
"The board will receive my notification within the hour, Arthur," Sarah said, her tone absolute. "And they will attend, because my signature holds the controlling voting proxy. If you wish to retain your executive vice presidency, I suggest you finish your breakfast, put on a professional suit, and be seated in the boardroom at ten o'clock sharp."
