Chapter 8: The Interrupted Arrest

The deputy stepped closer, his hand resting firmly on the grip of his service weapon as he sized Julian up. “Mr. Hayes, I need you to step back from the trolley right now. You’re interfering with a licensed funeral transport and making severe public accusations without proof. If you don't step away voluntarily, I’m going to have to place you in handcuffs for your own safety and the peace of this establishment.”

“Proof?” Julian shouted, stepping around the trolley so he stood between the deputy and the casket. He pointed a shaking finger at Evelyn. “She has a hidden ledger in her office detailing the purchase of paralytic drugs and offshore asset transfers! Dr. Vance falsified the death certificate! If you open this box right now, you will find my wife breathing!”

Dr. Vance swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses with a clammy hand. “Officer, that is absolute slander. As a licensed physician of thirty years, I personally examined the subject. Her heart stopped at 11:42 last night. This young man is experiencing acute hallucinatory grief.”

Evelyn stepped forward, placing a gentle, trembling hand on the deputy’s forearm. “Please, Officer. Let the transport proceed to the municipal crematory as scheduled. We can arrange for a psychiatric evaluation for Julian at the county hospital immediately afterward. I will cover all expenses.”

The deputy nodded slowly, convinced by Evelyn’s practiced performance and the official-looking documents the transport men held out. “Alright, Mr. Hayes. That’s enough. Hands behind your back. You’re coming with me to the station for a mental health hold and disturbing the peace.”

Julian watched in horror as the transport men stepped past him and grabbed the handles of the hydraulic trolley, wheeling the casket backward toward the ramp of the idling van. The bronze key felt heavy and burning hot in his coat pocket. He knew that once that van pulled away, Clara would be taken to the isolated north wing of Oakridge Estate, where no one would ever find her, and he would be locked away in a psychiatric ward under a heavy cocktail of sedatives.

Time seemed to slow down. The deputy reached out, grabbing Julian’s right wrist to twist it behind his back.

With a surge of desperate adrenaline, Julian wrenched his arm away, dropping low and driving his shoulder into the deputy’s midsection. The officer stumbled backward, tripping over the edge of a metal toolbox and crashing hard onto the concrete floor. The two transport men dropped the trolley handles, shouting in alarm as they rushed forward to subdue Julian.

Julian didn't fight them to escape; instead, he threw his entire body weight against the side of the mahogany casket. The heavy box tipped off the hydraulic trolley with a sickening wooden crash, hitting the concrete floor on its side. The impact popped the brass latches open, and the lid swung wide.

Clara tumbled out onto the floor, enveloped in white satin.

The entire bay fell dead silent. Clara’s eyes were open, wide with terror, her chest visibly heaving as she sucked in deep, ragged breaths of cold garage air. Her skin flushed pink as oxygen flooded her system, breaking the paralytic grip of the drug.

The deputy scrambled to his feet, staring down at the breathing woman on the floor in absolute shock. Evelyn’s face drained of all color, her polished mask shattering completely as she realized the game was irretrievably lost.
