Chapter 5: The Hidden Ledger

With a soft click, a concealed drawer slid open beneath the main desktop. Inside sat a single, leather-bound ledger with thick cream pages, alongside a stack of medical prescription pads bearing the letterhead of Dr. Marcus Vance. Julian’s hands trembled as he opened the ledger. The pages were filled with Evelyn’s meticulous handwriting, cataloging financial transactions dating back over two decades. But it was the entries from the past six months that caught his breath in his throat.

There were massive wire transfers moving from Clara’s personal trust fund into an offshore account controlled by Evelyn, paired with recurring medical supply purchases from a private pharmaceutical supplier in Baltimore. The itemized list was chilling: Pavulon derivatives, specialized paralytic agents, and neurological suppressants designed to induce a catatonic state lasting up to seventy-two hours while maintaining a suppressed metabolic rate that mimicked clinical expiration.

Julian flipped to the most recent page, dated yesterday. An entry read: Protocol H-7 initiated. Subject transferred to Oakridge Estate North Wing. Verification of dormancy confirmed by Dr. V.

Oakridge Estate. The very Victorian manor house with the locked north wing that Evelyn had forbidden him from entering during their entire three-year marriage. It wasn’t a repository for heirlooms; it was a private holding facility. Clara hadn't suffered a sudden heart failure at all. She had been poisoned by her own mother, placed into a drug-induced coma, and prepared for burial while still breathing, all to seize complete control of her substantial independent inheritance before the baby was born.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway outside the office. Heavy, deliberate steps that stopped directly outside the door.

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He quickly shoved the ledger back into the hidden compartment, sliding the drawer shut with a nearly silent click. He darted toward the private washroom attached to the office just as the brass doorknob began to turn. Slipping inside the narrow tiled space, he pulled the door until it was cracked by a single inch, peering through the gap into the main office.

Evelyn walked in, shedding her black mourning coat and tossing it over the leather armchair. She looked tired, the hard mask slipping away to reveal a woman desperate and calculating. She walked straight to the desk, her hand reaching underneath. She pulled the hidden drawer open, running her fingers along the contents. A look of satisfaction crossed her face when she felt the ledger, but her eyes narrowed as she noticed a slight misalignment in the way the leather spine was resting against the mahogany wall.

“Julian,” Evelyn called out into the empty room, her voice dripping with venomous certainty. “I know you’re in here. Come out before I make this much worse for you.”

Julian clutched the bronze key in his coat pocket, took a slow, deep breath, and pushed the washroom door wide open.
