Chapter 6 - The Broken Altar

The sleek fabric of Julian’s expensive overcoat strained as his hand shot out, fingers curling into a fist to grab the old woman by her collar. Before his knuckles could make contact, the scarred artisan moved with terrifying, preternatural speed. Her hand shot up, clamping around Julian’s wrist with a hydraulic grip of absolute steel. Julian gasped, a sudden look of shock contorting his handsome face as the pressure crushed against his radial nerve.

“Unhand me, you metal freak!” Julian choked out, his knees buckling slightly under the excruciating pain.

“Julian, stop!” Victoria screamed, stepping between them. The sharp command in her voice forced Julian to jerk his arm back, stumbling against the edge of a velvet-upholstered display bench. He cradled his bruised wrist, his chest heaving with humiliated fury as he glared at the old woman.

“Where did you find this lunatic?” Julian hissed at Victoria, his polished veneer completely stripped away, revealing the desperate predator underneath. “She’s trespassing! Call the private guards right now, or I’ll have this entire boutique shut down by morning!”

The old woman stood unbothered, dusting off her white apron with mechanical precision. Her glowing blue eyes locked onto Julian with a chilling, predatory focus.

“You don’t want the guards, Mr. Vance,” the old woman said, her voice carrying a metallic resonance that rattled the crystals of the overhead chandelier. “Not when the harbor police have already flagged the metadata on your deep-sea salvage manifest. They know the Leviathan wasn't an empty wreck. They know you pulled up sealed compartments that were never legally logged.”

Julian froze, the color draining entirely from his face. The panic in his eyes was unmistakable now. He looked at Victoria, seeing the cold, unyielding realization dawning in her gaze.

“Vicky… don’t listen to her,” Julian pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate, smooth-tongued cadence. “She’s a disgruntled former contractor. She’s trying to sabotage our merger. Our entire future depends on tomorrow’s wedding.”

“Our future?” Victoria echoed, her voice devoid of warmth. She walked slowly toward the glowing wedding dress, her fingers lightly brushing against the black and white pearls sewn into the abyssal silk. “You didn’t just buy salvage rights, Julian. You bought stolen property. You profited off a mass grave.”

Julian’s eyes darted toward the computer terminal still glowing in the corner, spotting the active audio waveform. A dark, vicious expression twisted his features.

“You played the log,” Julian whispered, stepping toward the desk. “You stupid, naive little fool. You’ve ruined everything.”
