Chapter 14 - The Final Vault

The glowing monitors mounted on the concrete wall flickered with live closed-circuit footage of the estate’s iron gates. Three black SUVs idled in the gray dawn mist, their headlamps cutting sharp beams through the drizzle as armed men swarmed up the grand stone steps of the manor.

“They tracked our digital footprint through the city grid,” Maya muttered, stepping up beside Victoria and pulling a heavy titanium crowbar from her duffel bag. “We have less than three minutes before they breach the main residence and descend into the sub-basement.”

Victoria didn’t panic. The fear that had once paralyzed her was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, laser-sharp clarity. She stepped inside the open vault, her fingers flying across the auxiliary keypad mounted beside the central safety deposit box.

“The ledger isn’t a physical book,” Victoria said rapidly, inputting a complex numeric sequence derived from the exact coordinates of the USS Leviathan’s final dive. “Julian thought it was stored on a hard drive, but my father was too paranoid for physical media. It’s an encoded biometric blockchain split across three separate cryptographic nodes.”

Maya stood guard by the vault entrance, her eyes locked on the heavy steel door leading up to the estate’s main staircase. “Hurry! I hear heavy boots on the floorboards above us.”

With a sharp beep, the central display panel inside the vault flashed a bright, solid green. A hidden compartment slid open smoothly from the back wall, revealing a single, glowing blue data crystal that pulsed with the exact same luminous frequency as the pearls on the abandoned wedding dress.

“I have it,” Victoria said, lifting the crystal from its resting dock.

Suddenly, heavy blows rained down against the reinforced sub-basement door above them. The wood splintered around the steel frame as the syndicate’s enforcers attempted to force their entry.

“There’s no time to take the tunnel back,” Maya said, her voice rising in urgency. “They’ve already secured the perimeter exits.”

Victoria clutched the glowing crystal tightly in her hand, looking around the secure archive room until her eyes landed on a heavy steel emergency chute designed for high-priority document incineration during naval audits.

“Into the chute!” Victoria yelled, pulling open the heavy metal hatch.

Without hesitation, Maya dove headfirst into the vertical steel shaft. Victoria followed a fraction of a second later, pulling the heavy hatch shut behind her just as the sub-basement door crashed inward with a deafening roar, showering the empty vault with splinters of wood and dust.
