Chapter 7

The murmurs in the grand ballroom died down instantly as the side door opened and Julian stepped up to the low wooden podium set up beside the floral altar. He was alone; neither Claire nor Lily followed him into the light. The amber spotlights caught the sharp angles of his face, illuminating the exhaustion etched around his eyes and the stiffness in his navy suit. One hundred and sixty pairs of eyes turned toward him, expecting a playful pre-ceremony joke or an announcement about a slight delay in the bride’s entrance.
Julian gripped the edges of the wooden podium, his knuckles turning white as he searched the sea of expectant faces. In the front row, Claire’s father, a distinguished man with silver-rimmed glasses and a sharp tailored suit, frowned slightly, leaning forward in his seat as he sensed the unnatural stillness in the room. Beside him, university friends and business associates exchanged confused glances, the cheerful hum of conversation evaporating into a thick, suffocating quiet.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, his voice echoing slightly through the discreet lapel microphone, sounding thin and strained against the vast acoustics of the hall. "Thank you all for being here today. I know many of you traveled long distances, across states and oceans, to celebrate this milestone with us." He paused, swallowing hard as his throat tightened. The words felt like broken glass on his tongue, but there was no way to soften the blow, no diplomatic phrasing that could disguise the sheer scale of the collapse.

"I need to inform you that there will be no wedding today," Julian said, the sentence dropping into the quiet room like a lead weight. A collective gasp rippled through the middle rows, followed immediately by a sharp, stunned silence. "Due to... circumstances that cannot be resolved, Claire has chosen to end the engagement. The ceremony is canceled, and the reception will not take place. I am profoundly sorry for the inconvenience, the wasted travel, and the disruption to your schedules."
For three agonizing seconds, nobody moved. Then Claire’s father stood up slowly from the front row, his face darkening with a dangerous, controlled fury. "Where is my daughter, Julian?" he asked, his voice carrying clearly across the room without the aid of a microphone. "What have you done to her?" Julian opened his mouth to reply, but no words came out. The carefully constructed facade of his life had completely dissolved, leaving him standing exposed under the bright ballroom lights, utterly defeated before a crowd of witnesses who now saw him for exactly who he was.
