Chapter 4

The silence that reclaimed the room was heavy, smelling faintly of expensive perfume, hot curling irons, and the damp scent of the white roses arrangements sitting in silver vases by the window. Julian stood frozen, the realization dawning on him that Claire’s threat was not an empty emotional outburst. He knew her well enough to recognize the terrifying resolve behind her calm exterior; when Claire made a decision, she executed it with the same ruthless precision she applied to her architectural blueprints.

Beatrice’s hands fluttered near her chest, her glittering gold sequin dress catching the light as she pivoted toward her nephew. "Julian, you must fix this immediately," she commanded in a harsh whisper, her voice trembling with panic and suppressed fury. "Apologize to her. Tell her whatever she needs to hear to drop this nonsense. We cannot have a scandal like this. The board members from your firm are downstairs, not to mention half the county’s social elite. Do not let your foolishness ruin everything we have built."

"There is nothing to fix, Aunt Beatrice, because nothing is broken in the way you think it is," Julian lied, though the hollow ring of his own words betrayed him. He took another step toward Claire, his hands raised in a gesture of reluctant appeasement. "Claire, be reasonable. Let us go downstairs, get through the ceremony, and we can discuss whatever paranoia is fueling this after the honeymoon. We can cancel the trip if you want. We can take a break. But do not blow up our lives in front of one hundred and sixty witnesses over a dress."

Claire let out a short, humorless laugh that held no warmth at all. "Our lives, Julian? You stopped living in our life months ago. You have been living a double script, and I was cast as the unsuspecting prop who paid the bills and smiled for the cameras." She reached down, picked up her small designer clutch from the dressing table, and slung the strap over her shoulder. "The wedding is canceled. I meant every word. If you try to stop me from leaving, I will call security and have you escorted out of your own rented venue."

Lily stood paralyzed by the door, the heavy lace of the wedding gown feeling like a lead weight dragging her down. Every eye in the room was momentarily diverted from Julian and Claire to her, the interloper caught red-handed in stolen silk. The humiliation burned hot and sharp beneath her skin, mixing with a strange, bitter sense of relief. For months, the secret had weighed on her conscience, eating away at her friendship with Claire, turning every shared coffee and casual conversation into a minefield of deceit.

As Claire turned her back on them and walked purposefully toward the private suite exit, Beatrice let out a soft groan and sank heavily onto the edge of the velvet chaise lounge. The gold sequins whispered against the fabric as her posture collapsed under the weight of impending social ruin. Julian stood motionless in the center of the room, watching the woman he had taken for granted walk out of his life without looking back once, leaving him alone with his ambition, his regrets, and the woman in the wrong dress.
