Chapter 4

The glow of the laptop screen cast a harsh blue light across Clara’s face as she sat at the mahogany desk in the home office. The house was entirely silent, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator downstairs. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, executing a series of rapid transfers between joint accounts and a private offshore holding she had established six months ago under her maiden name.
Moving two hundred and fifty thousand dollars required authorization codes sent to David’s phone, but Clara had bypassed that hurdle weeks ago by mirroring his notifications onto an old iPad left in the guest bedroom. As the text messages pinged silently on the secondary device across the room, she entered the verification codes one by one. The funds vanished into the digital ether, destined for an account in the Cayman Islands that no domestic family court could easily freeze or subpoena.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. It was an incoming call from an unknown number. Clara hesitated before pressing accept, holding the device to her ear.
“Mrs. Miller?” a young, steady voice inquired. It was Maya.
“Maya,” Clara replied, her tone instantly shifting into a cool, authoritative register. “You’re making a grave mistake taking Mrs. Miller out of her residence without family authorization. That constitutes unlawful detainment of a vulnerable adult.”
“Save the legal threats for someone who hasn’t been reading the security footage backups, Clara,” Maya fired back without missing a beat. “I downloaded the smart-home camera logs from the kitchen and the hallway before I packed our bags. I have high-definition audio and video of every time you shoved her, every time you locked her in the pantry, and what you were about to do with that brass candlestick today.”
Clara’s breath hitched, but she forced her voice to remain dangerously even. “You’re bluffing, Maya. Those cameras are connected to David’s enterprise network. You couldn’t access them without administrative credentials.”
“David gave me temporary admin access three weeks ago when he noticed the missing jewelry and asked me to investigate the house for security leaks,” Maya said calmly. “He wanted to know who was stealing from the master bedroom. Turns out, it wasn’t Martha at all. It was you hocking her antique gold bracelets to pay off your gambling debts at the municipal casino.”
The silence that stretched down the phone line was absolute. Clara felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her skin ice cold. Maya wasn’t just a caregiver; she was an investigator who had unraveled the entire tapestry of Clara’s hidden life.

“Name your price, Maya,” Clara said quietly, abandoning all pretense. “How much to delete the files and walk away?”
“I don’t want your money, Clara,” Maya replied. “I want you gone before David gets back. If you’re still in that house when the police arrive with my flash drive, you’ll spend the next twenty years behind bars.”
