Chapter 6 - The Men in the Dark Hallway

The beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, blinding everyone near the defense table.

"Get down on the ground! Do not move!" a harsh voice barked from the doorway, distorted by a heavy communication mask.

Judge Sterling immediately stepped in front of Leo and David, holding up his hands with practiced authority.

"Hold your fire! This is a federal courtroom!" the judge shouted, his voice commanding even in the pitch black. "Identify yourselves immediately or face immediate detention!"

The lead figure in the tactical gear lowered his rifle slightly, stepping forward into the dim emergency glow of the red ceiling lights. He pulled off his mask, revealing the pale, sweat-stained face of Captain Harris, head of the municipal security detail.

"With all due respect, Your Honor, the judicial protocols have been suspended," Harris said, his breathing heavy and erratic. "A state of emergency has just been declared by the governor's office. Every active file related to the Miller case is being seized under national security provisions."

Miller stepped forward, his face twisted in pure outrage as he pointed at the security captain.

"National security? You're talking about local embezzlement!" Miller yelled, stepping past the judge. "You don't have the legal authority to seize court documents without a congressional warrant!"

Harris didn't even blink. He signaled to the armed officers behind him, who immediately fanned out across the courtroom, ignoring the judge entirely and sweeping toward the defense table where the manila envelope still lay open.

"The warrant was signed ten minutes ago, Counselor," Harris replied coldly, his eyes darting toward the papers in Miller's hands. "Hand over the audit report and the digital drive, or we will clear this room by force."

Leo pressed his face against his father's chest, trembling uncontrollably.

"Dad, I'm scared," the boy whispered, his small fingers gripping the fabric of David's green shirt so tightly his knuckles ached.

David wrapped both arms around his son, shielding him completely with his body. He looked up at Captain Harris with eyes burning with a fierce, protective rage.

"You're not taking anything else from us," David growled, taking a slow step backward toward the judge's private chambers behind the bench.

"Dad, don't," Miller warned under his breath, holding out a restraining hand. "If you run now, they'll brand you a fugitive for real. There'll be no coming back."

"Staying here means getting buried alive," David retorted, his voice sharp and absolute.

Judge Sterling slowly reached out his hand, grabbing the yellowed arrest warrant from the desk and slipping it into the inner pocket of his judicial robe before Harris's men could reach it.

"Go," the judge muttered under his breath, not breaking eye contact with the security captain. "Use the judge's private exit. It leads straight down to the old subway maintenance tunnels beneath the city."

Harris noticed the movement and raised his rifle sharply.

"Stop them! Cut them off at the exit!" Harris roared.

As the armed guards surged forward, Judge Sterling threw his heavy wooden gavel directly at the main fuse box on the wall, sending a shower of dangerous blue sparks cascading over the advancing officers.
