Chapter 15 - The Open Road

The deafening pop of a single sniper rifle shot echoed across the impound lot before Marcus could pull his trigger. The pistol flew from his hand, clattering harmlessly onto the gravel as Marcus stumbled backward, dropping to his knees with his hands raised in surrender as a half-dozen federal agents swarmed the area with assault rifles drawn.
"Federal agents! Stay down!" a voice bellowed through a bullhorn.
Within seconds, Marcus and Sheriff Miller were pinned to the ground and slapped with heavy steel handcuffs, their decades-long criminal enterprise collapsing in a matter of minutes under the weight of Arthur Vance’s final, meticulous engineering feat.
Bo and Vance let out heavy sighs of relief, leaning against a rusted sedan as federal officers secured the scene and took possession of the microcassette archives. Maeve stood frozen in the center of the yard, the leather-bound notebook clutched tightly against her chest like a shield.
Jack walked over to her slowly, his heavy boots crunching on the gravel. He reached out and gently placed a calloused hand on her shoulder, his weathered face softening into a warm, proud smile.
"Your dad would be damn proud of you, Maeve," Jack said softly, his voice full of genuine emotion.
Maeve looked up, blinking back a final tear as a small, genuine smile finally broke through her exhausted expression. "We still have a bike to finish," she whispered.
Three weeks later, the Iron Eagle garage was filled with the sweet, unmistakable scent of fresh paint and burning fuel. The vintage 1974 Triumph Bonneville Custom stood gleaming under the bright halogen lights, its blue tank polished to a mirror finish, its engine purring with a deep, rhythmic, flawless roar.
Maeve stood beside the workbench, wearing her beige jacket and white t-shirt, tightening the final bolt on the custom carburetor her father had designed. Jack handed her a clean shop rag, while Bo and Vance stood nearby, nodding in silent, profound respect.

Maeve climbed up onto the vintage motorcycle, her fingers resting lightly on the polished chrome handlebars. She kicked the starter pedal down with a confident thrust. The motor roared to life instantly, filling the entire garage with a powerful, beautiful sound that echoed out through the open bay doors and straight down the sunlit highway.
She pulled her helmet down over her red hair, giving Jack one last grateful nod before rolling the throttle forward. As the motorcycle surged out of the garage and onto the open American road, Maeve finally felt the heavy ghosts of the past fade away, leaving only the endless horizon and the open road ahead.
