Chapter 13 - The Metal Box in the Chassis

The pale beam of Maeve’s phone flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating thick layers of dust and rust caked over the military-grade metal lockbox hidden inside the rusted chassis of the abandoned police cruiser. The emblem of the Iron Heads—a winged skull clutching a wrench—was deeply embossed on the lid.
"Jack," Maeve whispered, her voice trembling as she tapped the side of the metal box. "Look what's under here."
Jack lowered his steel pipe just an inch, his eyes darting toward the hidden compartment. He crouched down beside her, brushing away a thick mat of dead leaves and spiderwebs. He tapped the latch with his knuckles; it was sealed with an old-fashioned combination padlock, but the shackle was rusted clean through.
"That's the missing archive," Jack murmured, awe washing over his weathered features. "Arthur didn't just hide the bike frame. He hid the club’s entire ledger right under the nose of the local police department."
"Move away from the car!" Marcus's voice echoed menacingly through the rows of rusted vehicles, drawing closer by the second. The crunch of his boots on gravel sounded just two aisles over.
"Vance, Bo, buy us thirty seconds!" Jack ordered sharply, standing up and pulling Maeve by the arm.
"With pleasure," Vance grinned grimly, grabbing a heavy iron leaf spring from a workbench axle and tossing it to Bo.
The two veteran bikers slipped silently into the shadows between two stacked sedans, preparing to ambush the approaching threat. Jack pulled the heavy metal lockbox free from the chassis with a sharp metallic screech. It weighed at least thirty pounds.
"Maeve, take the notebook and run toward the highway," Jack urged, thrusting the leather journal back into her hands. "Find a payphone, call federal marshals directly. Give them the badge number on Miller's uniform."
"I'm not leaving you here!" Maeve protested fiercely, tears of frustration spilling over her freckled cheeks. "We came this far together!"
"If you die here, Arthur's sacrifice means nothing!" Jack shouted back, his voice cracking with desperate urgency. "Run, Maeve! Now!"
Before Maeve could argue another word, a violent scuffle erupted two aisles over. Bo’s deep bellow echoed through the junkyard, followed by the dull thud of a body slamming against sheet metal and the sharp clack of a dropped weapon.
"Got one!" Vance yelled triumphantly.
Suddenly, a blinding halogen spotlight blazed to life from the top of the impound lot's perimeter fence. Sheriff Miller stood on the roof of his patrol car parked outside the gate, holding a massive tactical floodlight that illuminated the entire junkyard like a stadium at noon.
"Nobody moves!" Miller shouted through a megaphone, his voice echoing off the surrounding metal walls. "Drop the box, Jack! Drop it right now, or I open fire on the girl!"

Jack froze, holding the heavy metal lockbox in his hands. He looked up toward the gate. Marcus stepped out from the shadows directly behind the sheriff, wiping a streak of blood from his cheek, holding a loaded pistol aimed squarely at Maeve’s chest.
