Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Intervention

A marked cruiser hurtled into the mouth of the alley with its emergency strobes painting the brick walls in violent flashes of red and blue. The cruiser slammed to a halt, cutting off the black sedan's escape route completely. The driver's side door flew open, and Officer Diaz stepped out, one hand resting instinctively on the holster of his service weapon, his face set in a stern, professional mask.
Evelyn froze mid-stride, her hand hovering inches from Clara. Her polished composure cracked further, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her eyes as she realized the unpredictable variable she hadn't accounted for. Marcus hadn't mentioned local law enforcement involvement. Victor Vance immediately closed his briefcase with a sharp snap, his professional demeanor shifting instantly into defensive corporate damage control.
"Is there a problem here, officers?" Victor asked smoothly, stepping forward to block Officer Diaz’s line of sight toward Clara. "We’re just handling a private family matter. A custody dispute being resolved amicably."
Officer Diaz ignored Victor entirely, his experienced gaze scanning the tense scene, lingering on Clara’s tear-stained face, her heavy pajamas, and the infant strapped tightly to her chest. Diaz had responded to enough domestic disturbance calls to recognize the unmistakable dynamic of coercion and desperation. He took two deliberate steps past the lawyer, his hand sliding away from his holster as he addressed Clara directly.
"Ma'am, are you being coerced or threatened?" Officer Diaz asked, his tone firm yet surprisingly gentle. "Do you need assistance?"
Before Clara could speak, Evelyn pushed past Victor, her voice dripping with calculated authority and icy composure. "Officer, this woman is clearly unstable. She suffers from severe postpartum psychosis and has absconded with my granddaughter in violation of a temporary family court order. I am her legal guardian under state statute. Arrest her before she hurts the child."
Clara’s breath hitched. The sheer speed of Evelyn’s fabrication was breathtaking. She watched in horror as Officer Diaz hesitated, his hand hovering near his notepad as the weight of Evelyn’s fabricated legal claim registered. Clara knew that if Diaz believed Evelyn, they would pry Maya from her arms right there under the flashing red and blue lights, and she might never see her daughter again.
"He's lying!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with raw, desperate anguish. "Check my bag, officer! I have my ID, my birth certificate, and the adoption papers! She has no legal custody! They're trying to steal my baby because my husband is missing!"
Officer Diaz looked between Clara’s frantic, tearful eyes and Evelyn’s cold, unblinking glare. He held up a hand, motioning for everyone to stay back. "Ma'am, let's calm down. I need to see some identification and the paperwork you mentioned. Step away from the vehicle, both of you."
Evelyn’s face tightened into a hard, venomous sneer as she realized her bluff hadn't worked instantly. She whispered something sharp to Victor, who subtly reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a burner phone and tapping out a rapid text message. Clara watched the exchange with a sinking feeling in her stomach. Even if Officer Diaz helped her tonight, Evelyn’s reach extended far beyond a single patrol cop in a dark alley.

"You can't protect her forever, Officer," Evelyn muttered coldly as Diaz stepped closer to inspect Clara’s documents. "By morning, that badge of yours won't even be enough to keep you out of unemployment."
