Chapter 12 - The Rotor Blades Above

The heavy thud of helicopter rotor blades grew rapidly louder, vibrating through the log walls of the cabin and rattling the glass in the front windows. Clara scooped Maya out of the bassinet instinctively, clutching the infant tightly to her chest as the swirling downdraft kicked up dust and pine needles across the front yard. Arthur strode quickly to the front door, pulling it open to peer out into the twilight sky just as a matte-black utility helicopter crested the northern ridge, its searchlight sweeping across the clearing in blinding white arcs.

"They didn't just send auditors," Arthur muttered grimly, his jaw clenching as he watched the aircraft hover dangerously low over the tree line, flattening the tops of the pines. "That's a private corporate transport. They're landing in the upper pasture."

Martha rushed into the living room, grabbing a heavy wool blanket from the sofa and wrapping it around Clara’s shoulders. Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with fierce determination. "Clara, take the emergency pack by the back door. There's a hidden root cellar dug into the hillside behind the barn. Arthur and I will stall them at the front."

"No!" Clara protested, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm not hiding while they threaten you! This is my fight, not yours!"

"It's everybody's fight when corporate thugs start trampling over innocent people in the backcountry," Arthur interrupted, reaching behind the stone hearth to pull down a double-barreled shotgun from its wooden wall mount. He broke the action open, checked the dual brass shells, and snapped it shut with a satisfying click. "Now go. That cellar is your only chance to get out of the valley before they lock down the perimeter."

The helicopter touched down in the upper pasture with a deafening roar, its landing gear crushing the split-rail fence. Through the front window, Clara watched as four figures clad in tactical gear disembarked from the cabin door, moving with military precision across the clearing toward the front porch. Leading them was Victor Vance, his expensive trench coat flapping wildly in the rotor wash, holding a thick leather folder in one hand and a satellite phone in the other.

Clara knew she couldn't outrun a helicopter in the open timberland, but she couldn't let them trap her inside the house either. She turned toward the back door, adrenaline surging through every fiber of her being. Martha guided her gently down the narrow mudroom hallway, unlatching the heavy rear screen door that led out toward the dark, sloping hillside behind the barn.

"Go, Clara! Don't look back!" Martha whispered fiercely, pushing her gently out into the cool evening air.

Clara bolted across the uneven ground toward the shadow of the barn, hugging Maya against her chest as the front door of the cabin burst open with a splintering crash.
