Chapter 8

The county courthouse was a sprawling limestone fortress of civic bureaucracy, its grand marble steps crowded with lawyers, defendants, and local reporters sipping paper cups of coffee. Mark and Marcus sat comfortably inside the unmarked sedan parked across the street, watching the main entrance through polarized binoculars.

"There’s Julian," Marcus muttered, pointing toward a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepping briskly out of a black town car. "And look who’s tagging right behind him—your dear wife, stepping out looking like she’s attending a funeral."

Mark watched Lily and Julian converge near the base of the courthouse steps, their body language tense and hurried as they conferred under the shadow of the grand pillars. "They’re filing for an emergency conservatorship," Mark said, his tone flat. "They’re trying to seize legal control of my assets before the federal freeze order fully processes."

"Let them walk right into the trap," Marcus replied smoothly, picking up his secure satellite phone and dialing a direct extension. "Agent Vance here. We have the targets on location at the county courthouse steps. Execute the writ of federal attachment now."

Within seconds, the dynamic around the courthouse steps shifted dramatically. Two black SUV's bearing federal insignia swerved abruptly toward the curb, their tires hissing against the asphalt. Four armed federal agents in tactical windbreakers poured out of the vehicles, moving with swift, synchronized precision directly toward Julian and Lily.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks as an agent stepped in front of him, flashing a golden shield. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Lily gasped, stumbling backward into a marble pillar as another agent approached her, reading her rights aloud with mechanical indifference. "Lily Sterling, you are detained for questioning regarding financial malfeasance and attempted homicide."

A small crowd of bystanders stopped to stare, cell phone cameras instantly flashing as the dramatic arrest played out on the public steps. Mark watched the scene unfold through the car window, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over him. The web of deception they had woven so carefully had finally tightened around their own necks.

"Shall we go inside and finalize the asset recovery paperwork?" Marcus asked, shifting the car into drive with a satisfied smirk.

"Let's go," Mark said, opening the door and stepping out into the crisp morning air, ready to reclaim his life.
