Chapter 6

The safehouse Marcus maintained was an unassuming brick bungalow located on the industrial outskirts of the city, surrounded by scrap yards and shipping container depots. To any casual observer, it looked abandoned. Inside, however, the living room had been converted into a high-tech digital command center, complete with multiple monitors, secure satellite relays, and encrypted servers humming rhythmically in the corner.

Elena Rostova, the forensic accountant Marcus had recruited, sat cross-legged in front of a sprawling multi-screen setup. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed, parsing through terabytes of financial data extracted from the hard drive Mark had brought.

"You have a serious leak in your corporate treasury, Mark," Elena said without looking up, adjusting her round wire-rimmed glasses. "These offshore transfers weren't executed overnight. They required internal authorization codes belonging to your Chief Financial Officer, Julian Vance—no relation to Marcus, thankfully."

Mark stiffened, leaning over the back of her chair. "Julian? My CFO? I’ve known him for twelve years. He was best man at my wedding."

"Well, your best man has expensive tastes," Elena muttered, bringing up a high-resolution photograph of a luxury yacht anchored off the coast of Monaco, registered under a shell corporation linked directly to Julian’s personal email address. "Julian provided the fraudulent signature templates to Lily, and in exchange, the syndicate promised him a controlling stake in the restructured post-bankruptcy enterprise."

Marcus crossed his arms, leaning against the kitchen counter with a cup of black coffee. "It’s a classic corporate squeeze. They isolate the founder, manufacture financial distress, use domestic leverage to neutralize personal stability, and then swoop in like vultures to carve up the carcass."

"How do we hit back before they realize we’re gone?" Mark asked, his voice steady and resolute.

"We don't wait for them to come to us," Marcus said, a slow, predatory smile touching the corners of his mouth. "We use their own greed against them. Elena has already drafted a fraudulent wire-recall notice, making it look like your personal accounts have triggered an automated federal fraud alert due to suspicious offshore activity."

Elena tapped a final key, and a green confirmation prompt flashed across the center monitor. "The alert has been automatically dispatched to the primary compliance officers at the syndicate's parent holding company, Vanguard Holdings. Julian and Lily are going to receive margin calls on those offshore accounts within the hour. They’ll panic."

Mark watched the data streams cascading down the screens. For the first time since he had looked down at that poisoned glass of red wine in his dining room, the power dynamic had shifted entirely. They had tried to poison him quietly in the dark; now, he was going to dismantle their entire operation in the blinding light of federal scrutiny.
