Chapter 9 - Voices from the Fire

The amplified audio recording crackled over the garden speakers, cutting through the murmurs of the wealthy donors like a jagged knife.

“Please! Someone unlock the side bolt! The smoke is too thick—I can’t breathe!”

The voice belonged to a young man whom nobody in the current administration recognized, yet the sheer terror in his desperate screams brought an immediate, suffocating dread to every person standing on the manicured lawn.

David stood paralyzed near the center of the patio, his mouth slightly open, his eyes fixed on the distant perimeter wall as the microphone feed switched to a clear, calm, unhurried narrative voice.

"Twenty years ago tonight, the orchard cottage and its attached family bakery were deliberately padlocked from the outside before being set ablaze," Maya’s voice rang out clearly across the street, amplified by the heavy-duty speakers set up in the public park. "The official report listed an electrical failure. But the young man trapped inside wasn't an employee—he was Thomas Vance, David’s younger cousin, who had threatened to expose the fraudulent land transfer to the authorities the very next morning."

Gasps erupted among the crowd of donors. Several prominent local figures immediately set down their champagne flutes, backing away from David as if he carried a contagious disease.

Elena didn't flinch. Instead, she set her glass down on a nearby table, turned on her heel, and walked briskly through the sliding glass doors back into the quiet, brightly lit kitchen, leaving the high-society gala to tear itself apart in the yard.

She walked straight to the quartz island, pulled open the hidden drawer beneath the pantry wall, and lifted out the remaining documents Marcus had failed to confiscate—including a thick stack of bank statements bearing David’s signature from the exact week of the fire.

The back door clicked open behind her, and David stumbled into the kitchen, his tie loosened, his face slick with sweat as he locked the deadbolt behind him with trembling hands.

"Elena, you have to help me," David pleaded, his voice cracking into a desperate whine as he rushed toward her, reaching out to grab her shoulders. "It was an accident! Thomas was supposed to meet me to sign the quitclaim deed, but things got out of hand—the lantern tipped over during the argument, I swear to God!"

Elena stepped back sharply, avoiding his touch as if he were poisonous. "You locked him inside, David. You watched him burn just like you watched Clara's life turn to ash, all so you could clear the title for this subdivision."

"If I go down, I'm taking everything with me," David hissed, his mask of civilized charm completely shattering to reveal the desperate, cornered animal underneath. "The house, the bank accounts, your name on the foundation—everything we built is tied to my clean record. If Maya plays the rest of those tapes, we lose it all."

Before Elena could answer, a loud crash echoed from the front foyer as the heavy mahogany front door was violently kicked open, sending splinters flying across the entryway tile.
