Chapter 10 - The Breach

The shattered remnants of the front door scattered across the immaculate entryway tile as a tall, imposing figure stepped into the foyer, flanked by two municipal police officers in full tactical gear.
It wasn't Maya.
It was Chief Inspector Harrison, a man whom David had known and dined with at the country club every Saturday for the past five years, his face carved into a mask of grim, absolute professionalism as he held up a signed federal arrest warrant.
David stumbled back into the kitchen, his eyes wide with disbelief as he watched the officers advance down the hallway, their boots heavy and unyielding against the hardwood.
"David Vance, you are under arrest for the obstruction of justice, arson resulting in homicide, and wire fraud related to the 2004 property acquisition," Inspector Harrison announced clearly, his voice echoing through the quiet, tense corridors of the house.
"This is an outrage! I demand to speak to my attorney!" David shouted, his voice pitching upward in panic as he backed up against the quartz island, knocking over one of the original bakery boxes and sending the remaining lemon-poppy seed cake tumbling onto the floor.
Elena stood perfectly still near the pantry, watching the man she had shared a bed with for fifteen years get handcuffed without offering the slightest gesture of comfort or defense.
As the officers hauled David toward the shattered front entrance, he caught Elena’s eye one last time, his expression twisting from desperate pleading into a look of venomous hatred.
"You knew, didn't you?" David snarled over his shoulder as they dragged him across the threshold. "You found the ledger months ago, and you’ve been waiting for the exact right moment to feed me to the wolves!"
Elena didn't answer. She simply watched the police cruiser’s red and blue lights flash against the front windows, casting dancing shadows across the empty kitchen until the wailing sirens faded into the damp night air.
Silence descended upon the house once more—a heavy, profound silence that felt entirely different from the one that had ruled the home before. It was clean.
Upstairs, a soft pair of footsteps padded down the grand staircase, and Elena turned to see Lily standing on the bottom step, rubbing her sleepy eyes in her blue dress.
"Mommy? Where is Daddy?" Lily asked softly, her voice carrying a small, tentative note of fear.
Elena walked over to the stairs, knelt down, and pulled her daughter into a warm, unbreakable embrace, resting her chin gently against the child's soft hair.
"Daddy had to go away for a very long time, sweetheart," Elena whispered, her voice steady and clear. "But everything is going to be okay now. We're finally safe."
Before Lily could ask another question, a quiet knock echoed from the back patio door—not the heavy, threatening pounding of earlier, but a single, gentle tap against the glass.
Elena froze, her arms tightening instinctively around her daughter as she looked slowly toward the sliding glass doors leading out into the dark garden.

Standing on the other side of the glass, illuminated by the pale moonlight, was Maya, holding a third cardboard bakery box in her hands, her expression calm, sorrowful, and entirely resolute.
