Chapter 6 - The Digital Blindness

The phone screen flickered once, flashed a blinding white, and then went completely dead. Julian stared at the black glass in disbelief as the internal components permanently fried themselves via a remote shutdown command. He hurled the useless device across the room, watching it shatter against the mahogany baseboard. The sound was sharp and violent, breaking the oppressive silence of the private study. He was cut off. No communication in, no communication out. The house had been converted into a digital fortress, and he was the prisoner locked inside the inner sanctum.

He turned back to the glowing monitor on his desk. The transfer progress bar had just reached one hundred percent, followed instantly by a clean, automated deletion sequence that wiped the local hard drives clean. Every digital footprint of his existence—tax records, corporate emails, personal journals—vanished into the ether in a matter of seconds. Elena and David hadn't just aimed to remove him; they intended to erase him completely, leaving behind a legal ghost with no proof of identity or ownership.

Footsteps echoed softly from the hallway outside the study, light and deliberate. Julian froze, his muscles tightening as he scanned the room for a makeshift weapon. He grabbed a heavy bronze paperweight off the desk, his knuckles turning white as he pressed his back against the bookshelf. The door handle turned slowly, the metallic click sounding deafeningly loud in the quiet room.

The door pushed open to reveal not Elena, but Lily. The little girl stood in the threshold, her blue dress casting a stark contrast against the dark wood paneling. Her long light brown hair was slightly tousled, and her rag doll was tucked firmly under one arm. She didn't look at the smashed phone or the glowing computer screen. Instead, her wide, knowing eyes fixed squarely on Julian’s white-knuckled grip on the bronze paperweight.

"You can't fight them with that, sir," Lily said softly, stepping into the room without an ounce of childhood fear. "They already own the gate. They already own the police report."

Julian lowered the paperweight slightly, staring down at the child in utter bewilderment. "What did you just say, Lily?" he demanded, his voice barely above a whisper. "How do you know about the police report?"

Lily walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. She reached into the pocket of her blue dress and pulled out a small, folded piece of heavy cardstock, holding it out toward him with a steady hand. Julian hesitantly released his weapon, taking the paper from her small fingers. He unfolded it with trembling hands, his eyes scanning the printed text.

It was an official missing person declaration, dated for tomorrow morning, already signed by Elena and countersigned by a local magistrate. The listed cause of disappearance was foul play suspected by a mentally unstable husband.

Julian’s breath hitched as he looked from the paper back to the little girl. "Who are you, Lily?" he asked, a cold dread pooling in his stomach.
