Chapter 13 - The Uninvited Guests

The heavy boots marched across the checkered marble floor of the foyer upstairs, moving with an unmistakable authority that commanded immediate attention. Julian froze mid-motion, his hand still raised above the fallen David, who was spitting blood onto the dusty basement concrete. Elena stopped crying instantly, lifting her tear-streaked face toward the ceiling with a sudden, desperate surge of hope.

"They're here," Elena whispered, a twisted, hysterical smile returning to her lips. "The local precinct... we paid them to check on the welfare call. You just assaulted David in front of witnesses. You played right into our hands, Julian."

David wiped his bleeding lip with the back of his hand, struggling to push himself up from the shattered glass and chemical bottles. A victorious, blood-stained grin spread across his face as he looked up at the stairwell. "It’s over, Julian," David muttered, his voice dripping with malice. "You just handed us the physical assault charge on a silver platter. You're going away for a very long time."

Heavy footsteps began descending the concrete stairs. Two uniform police officers appeared in the harsh fluorescent light, their hands resting cautiously on their holstered service weapons. But as they reached the bottom landing, the lead officer didn't look at Julian or David. Instead, he snapped to attention and saluted a tall, silver-haired man who followed them down the stairwell—a man wearing an expensive federal prosecutor’s badge pinned to his tailored overcoat.

Julian’s breath hitched. He didn't recognize the prosecutor, but David and Elena’s triumphant expressions dissolved into absolute, paralyzing horror in a fraction of a second.

The federal prosecutor stepped past the officers, his cold, piercing eyes sweeping over the shattered chemicals, the bleeding man on the floor, and Elena pressed against the concrete wall. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a thick manila folder stamped with federal seals.

"David Vance and Elena Sterling," the prosecutor said, his voice echoing loudly in the enclosed cellar. "You are hereby placed under federal arrest for corporate wire fraud, international asset laundering, and conspiracy to commit premeditated homicide."

David staggered backward, slamming hard against the shelf. "There... there must be some mistake," David stammered, his corporate arrogance completely evaporating. "We have an arrangement with the local precinct. This is a private matter!"

"Your local arrangements expired the moment your offshore server mirror was automatically backed up to a secure federal database," the prosecutor replied smoothly. He turned his gaze toward Lily, who stood quietly at the top of the stairs, still holding the dictaphone. The prosecutor gave the little girl a respectful, almost reverent nod. "And we have a very reliable witness who ensured the integrity of the data chain remained unbroken from the very beginning."
