Chapter 6: A House Built on Secrets

The silence that followed was vastly different from the tense quiet that had greeted Jacob when he first walked into the dining room. It was no longer an atmosphere of accusation, but rather the heavy, suffocating stillness of a truth finally laid bare. Jacob stared at his hands, noticing for the first time the slight tremor in his fingers—the same tremor he had seen in his uncle Arthur moments before. Genetics and trauma, bound tightly together in a knot that could no longer be untied with anger or denial. He looked across the table at his aunt Helen, who had not spoken again since her sharp rebuke. She looked older, her hair thinner, her eyes carrying a profound weariness that mirrored Clara’s bruised face.
"I'm sorry," Jacob muttered, the words feeling pitifully small against the backdrop of years of systematic destruction.
"Sorry doesn't rebuild a foundation, Jacob," Helen said, though her tone lacked its previous bite, replaced by a dull resignation. "We spent years living in safehouses and relatives' basements while you played the victim in your lake house. Clara took the brunt of it. She stayed behind to manage the creditors while you drank yourself to sleep."
Clara pulled out the chair beside Jacob and sat down, wincing slightly as her bruised cheek caught the light. She reached across the mahogany wood and placed her hand over his. Her skin was cool and dry, a stark contrast to the burning shame flushing through Jacob’s veins. She did not pull away when he instinctively tried to withdraw his hand; instead, her grip tightened with a quiet, maternal authority that brook no argument.
"The house is sold, Jacob," Clara said softly, dropping the bombshell without warning.
Jacob jerked his head up, his eyes widening in alarm. "Sold? To whom? You can't just sell the family home without my signature!"
"I had your power of attorney, remember?" Vance interjected smoothly, tapping his silver pen against his leather-bound briefcase. "Signed by you three years ago during your rehabilitation stint in Oregon. You authorized me to act on your behalf in all real estate matters concerning this estate. The papers cleared this morning. The buyers take possession on the first of next month."

Jacob looked from the lawyer to his mother, betrayal flashing hot and bright in his chest. "You sold everything out from under me? Where am I supposed to go?"
"You aren't going anywhere yet," Clara said firmly, her eyes locking onto his with unwavering strength. "You are staying right here in this city, attending the clinic on 4th Street, and working every single day to earn your own way forward. No more trust funds. No more bailouts. No more hiding behind the lake house."
