Chapter 1: The Weight of Broken Porcelain

The dining room air carried the sharp scent of roasted garlic and cold vinegar, lingering over the remains of an elaborate dinner that had clearly ended in violence. Shards of white porcelain crunched underfoot, scattered across the polished hardwood floor like jagged stars. Clara stood rigidly near the heavy mahogany table, her silver hair caught in a stray beam of afternoon sunlight that cut through the dust motes. A dark, swollen bruise blossomed across her left cheekbone, stark against her pale skin. She wore a simple light blue blouse paired with dark trousers, her posture stiff yet practiced. Across the room, near the swinging door of the kitchen, Jacob stood frozen. He wore a worn grey t-shirt and matching grey trousers, his hands tucked nervously into his pockets. Clara watched him with eyes that had seen too many winters.

"So you finally learned. That’s better," Clara said, her voice dry and devoid of warmth, cutting through the heavy stillness of the room.

Jacob blinked, his chest rising and falling in a slow, controlled rhythm. He did not flinch at the sight of the broken china or the dark mark on her face. Instead, a peculiar, tight smile stretched across his mouth. He stepped forward, his footsteps muted by the expensive Persian rug that lay half-covered in debris. Clara maintained her gaze, neither backing away nor offering any gesture of comfort.

"Sit down, Jacob," she instructed, pointing a slender finger toward the head of the long table.

Jacob hesitated for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes darting toward the empty chairs flanking the mahogany surface. The table was laden with untouched dishes—platters of cold meat, bowls of congealed gravy, and silver cutlery resting beside crystal glasses filled with red wine that no one had drunk. He pulled out a heavy wooden chair and lowered himself into it, his eyes immediately locking onto the far end of the table where a stranger sat in absolute silence.

The man in the suit—middle-aged, wearing a dark wool suit and a perfectly knotted silk tie—watched Jacob with an unblinking, analytical stare. Jacob swallowed hard, the unexpected presence of an outsider throwing him off balance.

"Gladly. Who’s here?" Jacob asked, his voice tightening slightly as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, realizing the room was far more crowded than he had initially perceived.
