Chapter 9

The piercing wail of police sirens flooded the dining room, washing alternating flashes of harsh red and blue light over the faces of the stunned crowd. Pastor Thomas turned toward the shattered entryway, his expression hardening as the heavy crunch of boots on gravel signaled the arrival of local law enforcement.

"Who called the police?" Sister Beatrice demanded, her eyes darting accusingly around the room. "We came here for our money, not to start a riot!"

"I did," Marcus Vance replied calmly, his voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority. He withdrew his satellite phone, sliding it smoothly into his suit jacket. "Vanguard Capital maintains strict protocol regarding civil disturbances on foreclosed properties. Furthermore, financial fraud exceeding one million dollars triggers an automatic electronic report to the state economic crimes division."

David stood frozen in the center of the room, staring wildly at the flashing red lights dancing across the walls. The reality of his impending arrest crashed down on him with crushing force. All his elaborate schemes, his social posturing, his desperate gambles at the poker table, and his calculated marriage to Maya had all boiled down to this single, humiliating moment.

He slowly turned his head toward his mother, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. "Mama... you have to help me. Tell them it’s a misunderstanding. Tell them I was just managing family assets!"

Mama sat rigidly in her chair, staring blankly at the open wooden box on the dinner table. The yellowed ledgers within seemed to weigh thousands of pounds, anchoring her to a past she had spent three decades trying to rewrite. She did not look at her son. Her face was a mask of hollow despair, the fierce matriarch reduced to a ghost haunting the ruins of her own ambition.

"You used your father’s name to build a temple of lies, David," Mama whispered, her voice barely audible over the sirens outside. "And you brought ruin to everyone who trusted us."

Heavy footsteps echoed on the porch, and two uniformed police officers stepped through the ruined front doorway, their hands resting cautiously on their utility belts. The leading officer, a tall sergeant with a stern expression, scanned the tense room before fixing his eyes directly on David.

"Are you David Adebayo?" the sergeant asked, his voice booming in the confined space.

David couldn't speak. He nodded mutely, his knees shaking so violently he had to grab the back of a chair to keep from collapsing.

"Mr. Adebayo, you are under arrest for felony wire fraud, embezzlement, and malicious destruction of secured collateral," the sergeant stated, stepping forward and pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the officer reached out to grab David’s wrists, Maya stepped directly between them. The gold silk dress shimmered under the flashing red lights, giving her an ethereal, almost untouchable aura. She held up her hand, stopping the police officer mid-motion.

"Wait, Officer," Maya said smoothly. "Before you take him out through that crowd, there is one small formality that needs to be addressed."

She reached into her pocket, pulled out a thick legal document, and tossed it carelessly onto the plate of untouched spiced beef.

"He signs the complete relinquishment of all remaining personal assets first," Maya said coldly, locking her eyes onto her trembling husband. "Or the corporate audit expands to include his mother as an active co-conspirator."

David gasped, his eyes darting wildly between the cold steel handcuffs in the officer's hand and the pen Maya was casually holding out toward him.
