Chapter 4

The heavy oak front door swung open, and the cool night air rushed into the stifling dining room, carrying with it the faint scent of rain. A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stood in the foyer, holding a thick manila envelope embossed with the seal of the municipal high court. He looked past the entryway, his eyes scanning the tense tableau: Mama frozen in shock at the head of the table, David standing with his fists clenched over his knocked-back chair, and Maya standing regally near the hallway archway in her shimmering gold dress.

"Pardon the intrusion," the stranger said, his voice deep and steady, cutting through the heavy atmosphere like a knife. "Are you David Adebayo?"

David wiped the sweat from his forehead, his chest heaving as he stared at the intruder. The sudden appearance of an outsider shattered whatever fragile containment was left of the family crisis.

"Who are you? How did you get in here?" David demanded, his voice cracking with rising panic. He took a step forward, instinctively trying to shield the table and his mother from whatever new nightmare was walking through his front door.

"My name is Marcus Vance," the man replied calmly, stepping fully into the warm light of the dining room. He did not look like a messenger boy or a debt collector; he carried himself with the quiet authority of a high-powered attorney. "I represent Vanguard Capital. We are the primary lienholders on the commercial property downtown, as well as the residential trust holding the title to this very house."

Mama slowly rose from her chair, her purple gele swaying as she steadied herself against the table. Her eyes, usually filled with fierce maternal pride, now burned with a terrifying, hollow despair.

"This house?" Mama whispered, her voice barely audible. "What does he mean, David? Tell me he is lying. Tell me this man is an impostor."

David couldn't speak. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked like a man drowning in deep water, desperately grasping for air that wasn't there.

Maya did not move from the archway. She crossed her arms over her chest, the gold pendant necklace resting against her collarbone. She watched Marcus Vance with an expression of cold, calculated interest that suggested she was far less surprised by this development than anyone else in the room.

"Mr. Adebayo defaulted on his final restructuring payment forty-eight hours ago," Marcus continued, pulling a document from the manila envelope without breaking eye contact with Mama. "Under the terms of the collateral agreement signed twelve months ago, the ownership of this estate, along with all attached ancestral properties, has legally transferred to our corporate holding entity."

Marcus paused, letting the devastating words hang in the air before delivering the final blow.

"You have seventy-two hours to vacate the premises."

Mama let out a low, guttural sound of pure agony, clutching her chest as her knees buckled beneath her. She collapsed backward into her chair, her breath catching in her throat.

"Mama!" David screamed, lunging around the table toward her.

"Don't you dare touch her!" Maya yelled, stepping forward with a ferocity that stopped David dead in his tracks.

Before David could reach his mother, Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding out a second, smaller envelope specifically toward Maya, whispering something that made her eyes widen in sudden, genuine shock.
