Chapter 2 - The Amber Vial

The amber medicine bottle rested quietly against the front wheel of Arthur's chair, its clinical white label smeared with a smudge of fingerprint powder. Arthur stared at the tiny black lettering printed on the glass: Digoxin - Fatal in high doses. His breath caught in his throat, a cold wave of realization washing over him. The very medication prescribed to regulate his failing heart had just been casually carried by the woman he trusted with his life.

Eleanor lay sprawled on the grey carpet, her white satin blouse slightly torn at the shoulder, her black skirt hiked up awkwardly. Instead of looking defeated, her features hardened into a mask of calculated malice. She scrambled forward on her hands and knees, lunging desperately across the plush floor to retrieve the vial before anyone else could touch it. Her manicured fingernails scraped against the wool carpet fibers, missing the glass by mere inches.

"Don't you dare touch that," Clara commanded, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of chilling authority. The nurse kicked her foot out, sliding the amber bottle further away from Eleanor’s outstretched fingers. Clara bent down swiftly, scooping the bottle into her palm with surgical precision.

Eleanor froze, her hand hovering in empty air. Slowly, she lifted her head. Her face was flushed, but her eyes were remarkably calm—the terrifying calm of a cornered predator. She glared up at Arthur, who sat paralyzed above her.

"Arthur, you can't possibly believe this hysterical child and this clumsy nurse," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with venomous sweetness. "They are plotting against us. They want to institutionalize you so they can control your estate. That bottle is just my natural herbal anxiety tincture. They switched the labels to frame me!"

"Liar!" Lily sobbed, burying her face into the fabric of Arthur's blue silk bathrobe. Her tiny frame shook with renewed grief. "She gave you the same drops yesterday, Daddy! That's why you couldn't wake up for dinner!"

Arthur looked from his weeping daughter to his furious wife. A profound, sickening dread settled deep in his chest. The exhaustion that had plagued him for months, the strange dizziness, the sudden paralysis flare-ups—none of it was natural. It was poison.

"Eleanor," Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously quiet, carrying a weight that made the room drop ten degrees. "Whose name is written on the pharmacy script taped to the back of this bottle?"

Eleanor’s lips parted, but no sound came out. Her eyes darted toward the front door as heavy footsteps echoed loudly on the porch outside.
