Chapter 1 - The Shattered Morning

Arthur sat rigid in his blue silk bathrobe, his knuckles white as he gripped the armrests of his wheelchair. His paralyzed legs felt heavier than usual beneath the thick wool blanket. Across the sunlit atrium, his eight-year-old daughter, Lily, sobbed hysterically on his lap. Her blonde ponytail was slightly askew, and her blue school cardigan trembled violently over her white polo shirt and plaid skirt. In her small, sticky hand, she clutched a half-filled glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, pointing a trembling finger toward the polished mahogany hallway.
"What is going on here?" Arthur demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of fear and absolute confusion. He looked down at Lily, whose face was stained with heavy tears. Her chest heaved with every ragged breath she took.
"I saw her!" Lily cried out, her high-pitched voice piercing the tense silence of the morning. She pointed aggressively toward the doorway. "I saw her! She put drops in the juice!"
Clara, the private home nurse dressed in spotless blue medical scrubs, stood frozen near the entryway. Her stethoscope dangled against her chest as she stared in absolute disbelief, clutching her aluminum medical clipboard so tightly her fingers turned pale. Before Clara could utter a single word of defense, Eleanor strode into the hallway from the shadows of the study. Eleanor, Arthur’s second wife, wore a crisp white satin blouse and a sleek black skirt. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.
"That's a lie!" Eleanor screamed, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. Her eyes locked onto Lily with venomous intensity.
Clara reacted on pure instinct, stepping directly into Eleanor’s path to shield the child. The nurse dropped her metal clipboard, which crashed loudly against the hardwood floor.
"Get out of my way, you incompetent fool!" Eleanor shrieked, shoving Clara hard in the chest.

A chaotic physical confrontation erupted in the narrow hallway. Clara tried to block Eleanor’s aggressive lunge toward Arthur and Lily, but Eleanor’s momentum was too great. As Eleanor swung her arm to push past the nurse, her stiletto heel caught the edge of a thick Persian runner. She tripped heavily, sprawling across the grey carpeted floor with a sharp gasp. As she fell, a small, amber medicine bottle slipped from the hidden pocket of her satin blouse, skidding across the floor and coming to a rest right beneath Arthur's wheelchair. Arthur’s eyes widened in horror as he looked down at the label, recognizing the lethal cardiac suppressant instantly.
