Chapter 12 - The Cabin in the Mist

The engine of the station wagon ticked loudly as it cooled in the damp, freezing air of the pine forest. Nobody moved. Inside the backseat, little Lily let out a soft yawn, completely unaware of the menacing black SUV idling fifty yards ahead of them in the dense fog.
"Turn the car around, David," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling as a cold dread pooled in her stomach. "Back up. Now."
"I can't," David muttered, staring through the rain-spattered windshield at the black vehicle. "Look at the exhaust pipes. They're already blocking the trail. If I reverse, we'll slide down the embankment into the ravine."
The passenger-side door of the black SUV slowly swung open. A tall figure stepped out into the mist, wearing a dark trench coat that billowed slightly in the cold wind. Even through the hazy fog, the silhouette was unmistakably professional—and entirely unyielding.
"Stay in the car," Emily commanded, her voice carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument. Before Sarah could stop her, the sixty-year-old woman reached for the door handle, pushed it open, and stepped out onto the damp forest floor.
"Mom, no! Get back inside!" Sarah cried out, reaching across the console, but the rear door had already slammed shut.
Emily walked with steady, unhurried steps toward the idling SUV, her dark patterned blouse contrasting sharply against the gray mist. The figure in the trench coat waited by the open door, watching her approach without making a single aggressive move.
As Emily stopped a few feet away from the stranger, the overhead dome light of the SUV flickered on, illuminating the driver’s face.
Sarah gasped, pressing her hands against the glass. It wasn't an assassin or a cartel enforcer. It was a woman with neat blonde hair tied back in a professional bun, wearing a tailored gray trench coat that matched Arthur Vance’s corporate aesthetic down to the last button.
"Who is that?" David hissed, squinting through the windshield. "I've never seen her before in my life."
"I have," Emily’s voice carried clearly through the cracked window of the station wagon as she spoke to the strange woman. "You took forty years of my life, Eleanor. Isn't that enough?"
The woman in the trench coat—Eleanor—smiled thinly. It was a cold, calculated expression that mirrored Arthur Vance’s dying smirk.
"Forty years is a long time to keep a secret, Emily," Eleanor replied, her voice smooth and echoing through the quiet clearing. "Especially when that secret involves the embezzlement of a federal sovereign fund disguised as a family inheritance."
Sarah turned her head sharply toward David, her eyes blazing with betrayal.
"A federal sovereign fund?" Sarah repeated, her voice rising in pitch. "David, what is she talking about? What did your family steal?"
David squeezed his eyes shut, leaning his forehead against the steering wheel.
"It wasn't my family, Sarah. It was my grandfather," David confessed, his voice muffled against the rubber wheel. "The foundation of this entire town... the corporate trusts, the real estate development, the hospital—it was all built on laundered cartel money from the 1970s. When I found out five years ago, I tried to blow the whistle. That’s why they faked my death. That’s why Arthur locked me in the basement."
Eleanor walked slowly around the front of the SUV, closing the distance between herself and Grandma Emily. She pulled a heavy, manila envelope from her trench coat pocket and held it out.
"You can run to this miserable old cabin all you want, Emily," Eleanor said smoothly. "But the keys to the trust aren't in your pocket. They're inside the foundation of the house you just fled."
Emily didn't take the envelope. Instead, she reached into her pocket, pulled out a small, metallic object, and held it up for Eleanor to see.
It was the ignition key to the black SUV.
Eleanor’s calm facade instantly shattered into panic as she patted her empty coat pocket.
"Looking for this?" Emily smiled coldly. "You walked right into the real trap, Eleanor."

Before Eleanor could react, the ground beneath the black SUV gave way with a deafening crash.
