Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Confrontation
The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the bright kitchen, illuminating the dust motes dancing above the heavy wooden dining table. Two-year-old Lily stood frozen, her tiny hands resting on the edge of the table. Her reddish-brown hair, styled in two neat pigtails, trembled slightly as her big expressive brown eyes blinked in absolute disbelief. Resting right in front of her was a white plate piled high with golden scrambled eggs and buttered toast, a breakfast she had proudly claimed just seconds earlier.
Grandma Emily stood across the table, her face carved from stone. With a swift, cold motion, her wrinkled hand reached out and snatched the white plate away, pulling it far out of the toddler's reach.
"No, you can't have that," Grandma Emily said, her voice devoid of any warmth or maternal affection.
Lily’s small face crumpled instantly. Her lower lip quivered violently before big, heavy tears welled up in her eyes. The betrayal was too immense for a toddler to process, and she let out a sharp, heartbroken sob that echoed off the tile walls.
Before the echo could fade, heavy footsteps pounded against the hallway floorboards. Sarah rushed into the kitchen, her blond hair slightly disheveled. Her face flushed with a mixture of alarm and white-hot anger as she instinctively stepped between her own mother and her weeping child.
"Mom, what on earth is happening?" Sarah demanded sharply, her voice cutting through the kitchen like a razor blade.
Grandma Emily clutched the white plate tightly against her dark patterned blouse, refusing to back down.
Sarah’s eyes darted from the plate of eggs to her mother’s hardened expression. A deep, agonizing realization began to pool in her stomach, but her fury superseded the dread.
"How dare you!" Sarah screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the older woman. "That is her breakfast!"

"You have no idea what is on that plate," Grandma Emily whispered coldly, her eyes flashing with a terrifying secret.
