Chapter 4 - The Crimson Key

The heavy brass key hit the floor with a dull, heavy thud that sounded entirely too loud in the silent kitchen. It rolled across the tile, coming to a dead stop right at the edge of the hidden floor seam. Everyone’s eyes dropped instantly to the object. The dark stain on the ornate handle was unmistakable—old, oxidized blood that had soaked into the intricate grooves of the brass work.
Clara stared at the key, her face losing its fierce composure for the first time. Her breath hitched, and she took an involuntary step back, her hands trembling as she clutched the edges of her dark maroon cardigan.
Sarah’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked from the key up to Clara’s pale, panic-stricken face, the terrifying puzzle pieces finally snapping together in her mind.
"This is the key to the hatch," Sarah said, her voice deadly quiet. "David didn't run away, did he? You trapped him down there, just like you try to trap us with your mind games and your cruel rules."
Clara forced a shaky, high-pitched laugh, shaking her head vigorously. "You are insane, Sarah. The stress of raising two children alone has addled your brain. That key belongs to the old antique chest in the attic. It’s just rust and imagination."
"Don't lie to me anymore!" Sarah shouted, finally snapping as years of passive-aggressive tyranny, gaslighting, and emotional abuse boiled over. She lunged forward and snatched the brass key off the floor before Clara could intercept her.
The metal felt freezing cold, almost burning her skin with its chill. As soon as her fingers wrapped around the ornate handle, the kitchen lights flickered violently overhead, plunging them into sudden, total darkness for three agonizing seconds.
When the recessed lights hummed back to life, Clara was no longer standing by the counter. She was blocking the kitchen doorway, her posture completely transformed. Her eyes were wide and wild, and in her right hand, she held a heavy, long-barreled utility knife she had pulled from the hidden magnetic strip behind the spice rack.
"I won't let you ruin this family," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with manic devotion. "I built this home to protect my bloodline from weaklings. If you unlock that door, you will see what happens to traitors."
Leo threw his arms protectively around Lily, backing them both into the corner near the refrigerator. Sarah stood between her children and the knife-wielding woman, clutching the bloody key in her palm so tightly the metal bit into her flesh.
"Put the knife down, Clara," Sarah warned, taking a slow step forward. "It’s over. The police are going to find out everything."

"The police won't help you," Clara smiled, a chilling expression that didn't reach her eyes. She raised the knife and jammed the blade deep into the wooden doorframe, splintering the pine with a sickening crunch. "Because the phone lines were cut an hour ago, and the storm outside just washed out the only bridge leading out of this valley."
