Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

The bright modern kitchen hummed with a heavy, suffocating tension that clung to the pristine granite countertops. Clara stood over the white ceramic plate, her hands trembling slightly as she aggressively shoveled another heavy mound of spaghetti and thick red sauce onto it. The splatter hit the rim, leaving greasy streaks of crimson. Seven-year-old Lily stood beside the island, her small shoulders shaking as silent tears tracked through the dust on her cheeks. Her blonde hair fell in tangled strands around her face. Next to her, nine-year-old Leo clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.

"This is what ungrateful children get," Clara snapped, her voice like grinding stones.

Lily looked up, her blue eyes swimming with terror and exhaustion. Her lower lip quivered uncontrollably.

"What happened?" Sarah demanded, her voice sharp and ringing with sudden maternal fury.

Clara dropped the spoon onto the counter with a deafening clatter, her expression twisting into a mask of pure victimhood as she turned toward her daughter-in-law.

"They are destroying everything I make," Clara lied smoothly, her voice dripping with venom. "They think they rule this house."

Sarah ignored the older woman completely, rushing past her to drop to her knees. She hauled both children into her arms, pressing them against her chest at the kitchen island.
