Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The silence that followed Arthur’s declaration was absolute, broken only by the distant, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corridor. Chloe’s hand trembled slightly, the white frosted cupcake slipping an inch before she steadied her grip. The pristine frosting smeared slightly against her thumb, a stark smudge of white against her skin.
"Lies," Clara spat, her voice regaining a brittle, desperate edge as she glared at her brother. "You always were a parasite, Arthur. Coming back here with forged documents just to ruin my granddaughter's wedding day out of petty spite."
"Forged?" Arthur chuckled, stepping further into the hall until he stood just three feet from the bride. He didn't look at Clara; his eyes were fixed entirely on Chloe with a strange, sorrowful mixture of pity and guilt. "Ask her, Clara. Ask her why the family lawyer died under mysterious circumstances three days after drafting the amended trust. Ask her why Chloe’s birth certificate has a watermark that didn't exist until 2010."
Elena stepped away from Clara, her teal dress whispering against the floor as she moved to stand beside the bride. She looked down at Chloe, her intense expression softening into genuine concern. "Chloe? What is he talking about? You knew your parents; we all attended their funeral twenty years ago."
Chloe stared straight ahead, her reddish hair framing a face that had turned as pale as her wedding gown. She lowered the cupcake slowly, placing it on a nearby silver service tray as if the weight of it had suddenly become unbearable.
"My parents died in that car crash," Chloe said, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. It sounded hollow, like a rehearsed line from a play she no longer remembered how to perform. "I have the photographs. I have the memories."
"Memories implanted by a woman who needed an heir she could control," Arthur countered smoothly, lifting the manila folder. He pulled out a single, yellowed sheet of paper and held it up toward the chandelier light. "Clara didn't adopt you out of charity, Chloe. She bought you from a closed clinic in upstate New York when your real mother refused to sign away the family holdings."
Clara lunged forward with surprising speed, her hand clawing at the air to snatch the paper from her brother’s grip. But Elena was faster. With a sharp shove, Elena sent Clara stumbling backward against the edge of a mahogany display table, scattering crystal wine glasses with a deafening crash.
"Don't you dare touch him," Elena warned, her voice vibrating with a lethal intensity. "Let him finish."
Clara clutched her side, her chest heaving as she glared at the scattered crystal at her feet. She looked up, her eyes blazing with a desperate, trapped fury.
"If you read that paper," Clara rasped, pointing a shaking finger at the document in Arthur's hand, "you destroy the only thing protecting this family from total ruin."
Arthur ignored her warning, unfolding the document completely and handing it directly to the bride. Chloe's hands shook violently as her eyes scanned the top line, her breath hitching in her throat as she read the name listed as her biological mother.
It wasn't the woman she had mourned for two decades.
May you like
It was Clara herself.
