Chapter 11 - Darkness and Disclosure

The sudden blackout swallowed the banquet hall whole, plunging the grand room into a suffocating, ink-black void. Little Lily let out a sharp, frightened cry from near the floral arrangements. Elena moved instantly through the dark, her hands guiding her by memory until she reached her daughter, scooping the trembling four-year-old into her arms and holding her tight against her teal bodice.

"I've got you, Lily. Mommy's right here. Don't let go," Elena whispered fiercely, her voice cutting through the thick silence.

In the center of the room, the only light source was the faint, flickering blue glow of Michael’s abandoned smartphone lying on the floor near the shattered ice swan. Its screen illuminated a small patch of marble, casting long, distorted shadows across the broken crystal and the spilled legal documents.

"Everyone stay where you are!" the detective shouted, drawing his service weapon, the metallic click of the slide echoing ominously in the dark. "Nobody move an inch!"

Clara let out a low, ragged moan from somewhere near the mahogany table. "The emergency generator... he cut the auxiliary lines too. We're buried alive in this tomb."

Evelyn’s voice rang out, steady and devoid of fear, cutting through the panic. "He's not trying to bury us, Clara. He's trying to blind us so he can get inside through the service tunnels."

Chloe clutched the brass key tightly in her palm, the cold metal pressing sharply into her skin. She stood frozen in the dim amber glow of the smartphone screen, her white strapless wedding gown looking like a ghost in the twilight. She could hear the faint, rhythmic scraping of metal against metal coming from behind the heavy oak panels—someone was working the exterior deadbolts with a heavy-duty hydraulic wedge.

"Chloe," Evelyn whispered, stepping closer to her daughter in the dark. "Give me the key. If they breach the doors, you need to get Lily and Elena out through the basement hatch behind the dais."

"I'm not running anymore," Chloe replied, her voice dropping to a dangerous, resolute whisper. She knelt down, picked up the glowing smartphone from the floor, and used its light to illuminate the manual override slot beneath the control panel. "This ends tonight. All of it."

Before Evelyn could stop her, Chloe shoved the brass key into the lock and turned it hard to the left.

A loud, pneumatic hiss echoed through the ceiling as the heavy hydraulic system groaned under the sudden manual release. The steel security shutters over the windows began to shudder, slowly grinding upward inch by inch, letting in the cool, pale light of the autumn moon outside.

As the light flooded the room, the heavy oak service door at the back of the banquet hall creaked open. A tall silhouette stepped out of the shadows of the corridor, holding a heavy-duty crowbar in one hand.

It wasn't Michael.

It was Arthur’s personal attorney, a man the family had trusted for twenty years, holding a loaded semi-automatic pistol pointed directly at Evelyn’s chest.

"End of the line," the attorney said coldly, his face partially cast in shadow. "Hand over the key and step away from the console."

Elena shifted Lily behind her body, her eyes narrowing with lethal intent as she scanned the room for an escape route, but before she could lunge, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind the attorney.
