Chapter 9

The flashing red and blue strobes painted the walls of the living room in frantic, violent streaks of color, casting long, distorted shadows over the ruined birthday balloons and the shattered cake. The high-pitched wail of multiple police sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street, cutting through the night air like a warning siren.

Viktor lowered his pistol just a fraction of an inch, his calculating eyes weighing the odds in a matter of split seconds. He knew the police response time in this district; a silent alarm must have been tripped somewhere, or a neighbor had finally called 911 after hearing the commotion and the smashing windows.

"Drop your weapon! Put your hands where we can see them!" the amplified voice commanded again from the darkness of the front yard, echoing off the aluminum siding of the house.

David dropped to his knees, pressing his palms flat against the frosted floorboards, whimpering like a beaten dog.

"I didn't do anything! It was all them! I'm a victim here!" David shrieked, completely abandoning any remaining shred of dignity as he pointed frantically toward Viktor and Laura.

Viktor didn't even look down at David. He kept his gaze locked entirely on Laura, who stood tall amidst the wreckage, holding the wooden stick with a fierce, unwavering grip. The blue frosting caked on the side of her face only added to her feral, untamed appearance under the flashing lights.

"This isn't over, Mrs. Hayes," Viktor said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that barely carried over the wailing sirens outside. "Your brother signed the deed. Legal ownership cannot be undone by a pair of local cops. We'll own this land by sunrise, with or without that hard drive."

Without waiting for a response, Viktor turned on his heel and moved with surprising agility toward the broken front window, leaping through the jagged frame into the darkness just as heavy footsteps rushed up the wooden front porch steps. His injured guard dragged himself along behind his boss, disappearing into the shadows of the overgrown front lawn.

Laura didn't pursue them. Her knees trembled violently as the adrenaline rush began to fade, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. She let the wooden stick slip from her fingers; it hit the floor with a dull thud for the final time.

The front door swung completely open, and two uniformed police officers rushed into the living room with their service weapons drawn, sweeping the space with tactical precision.

"Freeze! Stay right where you are!" the lead officer shouted, his eyes darting from David cowering on the floor to Uncle Greg huddled in the corner, and finally resting on Laura standing amidst the blue frosting and broken glass.

"Thank God you're here," Laura breathed, her voice cracking as the weight of the night finally crushed her spirits. She pointed toward the kitchen. "My daughter... my daughter ran out the back toward the railway tracks. She has a laptop with evidence of a massive property fraud and a criminal syndicate. You have to find her before they do."

The officer lowered his weapon slightly, gesturing to his partner to secure the perimeter while speaking rapidly into his shoulder radio.

"Call for a K-9 unit and backup along the ravine path behind the property," the officer ordered into his radio, before looking back at Laura with a skeptical frown. "Ma'am, you need to step away from the debris. We're going to need a full statement from everyone in this room."

Before Laura could answer, a loud, frantic pounding echoed from the back hallway, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps rushing back toward the living room.

It wasn't the police K-9 unit.

Iris burst back through the kitchen doorway, panting heavily, her face covered in dirt and soot. But she wasn't holding the laptop anymore. In her hand, she held a burning red flare she must have grabbed from the old emergency kit in the garage, casting a hellish, crimson glow over everyone in the room.

"Mom!" Iris screamed, her voice choked with pure terror. "They didn't run away. They're waiting for us at the end of the tracks, and they've got Uncle David's hidden ledger."
