Chapter 8: The Shadow of the Boardroom

The rich, savory aroma of the broth filled the cavernous space as the three of them ate in silence. The meal was unorthodox, humble, and entirely contrary to every tradition the Vance family had upheld for generations. Yet, as Eleanor swallowed the second spoonful, she realized the profound statement Chloe had engineered. It was a silent rebellion against the superficial luxury that had hollowed out her family for decades.
Julian wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, looking cautiously at his mother. “So, Mom… does this mean the wedding is still on?”
Eleanor set her crystal bowl down on the mahogany table with a soft clink. She wiped her fingers with her own napkin, maintaining a stoic expression that gave nothing away. “The wedding is the least of our problems, Julian. The board of directors has scheduled an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning. They caught wind of your venture capital investments in the green energy sector without their prior authorization.”
Julian’s face drained of color, his fork clattering against the crystal bowl. “How did they find out? That deal was supposed to be confidential.”
“Nothing is confidential in this family,” Eleanor said, her voice turning cold and professional once more. She turned her sharp gaze back to Chloe. “And they know you helped him structure the initial shell companies, Chloe. They think you are a gold-digger orchestrating a hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises from the inside.”
Chloe did not flinch. She set her bowl down beside the slow cooker, her blue eyes narrowing with quiet resolve. “They think I’m after the money?”
“They think you are a liability,” Eleanor corrected bluntly. “They are planning to strip Julian of his executive title tomorrow at nine o'clock and force him out of the family trust unless he breaks off the engagement and signs an ironclad non-disclosure agreement.”
Julian stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floorboards. “That’s insane! It’s my father’s company too! I have every right to invest in renewable energy!”
“You have the right to follow the rules, Julian, or you have the right to walk away with nothing,” Eleanor said, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. She looked at Chloe, watching for signs of betrayal, fear, or anger. Most women in Chloe’s position would have packed their bags and fled the moment they realized a multi-billion-dollar corporate war was attached to their engagement ring.
Instead, Chloe crossed her arms over her pink tweed jacket, a slow, confident smile spreading across her lips. “A green energy startup backed by shell companies,” Chloe murmured, her analytical mind instantly processing the legal vulnerabilities. “Julian, did you route those transactions through your personal offshore account or the family trust?”
May you like
Julian swallowed hard. “The personal account… but my signature is flagged by the board’s compliance software.”
“Then we don't fight them on their terms,” Chloe said, turning to Eleanor with absolute clarity in her eyes. “We pivot. Your board of directors is terrified of obsolescence, Mrs. Vance. They’re running a nineteenth-century empire on twenty-first-century fumes. If we show them that the green energy startup is already generating a twenty percent ROI, they won't fire Julian. They’ll try to take credit for it.”
