Chapter 2: The Two Hundred Dollar Budget

“What is the meaning of this insult?” Eleanor asked, her voice dropping to a low, glacial register that carried effortlessly across the empty ballroom.

Julian flinched at the sound, his hands clenching into tight fists inside his trouser pockets. He took a half-step backward, hoping to blend into the shadows cast by the towering floral arrangements near the exit. He had known this moment would be catastrophic, yet he had allowed Chloe to proceed, testing a boundary that had governed the Vance household for three generations. Eleanor maintained her unblinking stare, fixing her sharp eyes on the blonde woman who dared to mock her anniversary celebration with convenience store carbohydrates.

Chloe uncrossed her arms, letting her hands fall naturally to her sides as she met Eleanor’s hostile gaze head-on. There was no defiance in her posture now, only a quiet, grounded assurance that unnerved the older woman even more than arrogance would have. Chloe took a deliberate step forward, the heels of her boots clicking softly against the polished floorboards, bringing her closer to the makeshift altar of instant noodles and candle wax.

“Your son gave me two hundred dollars,” Chloe said, her voice steady and devoid of the defensive edge Eleanor anticipated.

Eleanor blinked, the sheer banality of the statement momentarily stalling her outrage. Two hundred dollars. A drop of water in an ocean of privilege. Julian had given his fiancée pocket change to prepare a celebratory meal for a family whose catering budget for a Tuesday dinner usually exceeded thousands of dollars. Eleanor’s mind raced through the implications. Was this a test of thrift, a juvenile joke at her expense, or a pathetic display of financial rebellion?

“Two hundred dollars,” Eleanor repeated, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She glanced down at the slow cooker, realizing with a sickening jolt that the candles weren't decorative; they were being used to keep the broth warm because Julian hadn't provided access to the industrial kitchen.

Julian cleared his throat, a pathetic, high-pitched sound that drew a withering glare from his mother. He offered a weak, apologetic smile, his face pale under the flattering lights of the chandelier. Chloe didn't look at him. Her focus remained entirely on Eleanor, recognizing the fortress of pride she was attempting to dismantle. The atmosphere in the grand hall shifted subtly, the initial shock giving way to a strange, heavy curiosity as the true nature of the experiment began to reveal itself beneath the surface of the joke.
