Chapter 2

The dust from the black SUV settled slowly over the baked earth, coating Clara’s polished pink dress in a fine layer of gray silt. She stepped protectively in front of the elderly woman, her gaze locking onto the man inside the vehicle. The stranger was Julian Vance, a high-ranking corporate executive from Clara’s own family conglomerate, a man she hadn't seen since her father’s sudden passing six months ago.

"Julian, what are you doing here?" Clara demanded, her voice carrying an edge of sharp authority that she usually reserved boardroom meetings. "This is private property."

Julian stepped out of the SUV, smoothing his expensive tie with calculated slowness. He ignored Clara entirely, his cold eyes fixed instead on the bearded man, who still clutched the weathered wooden bowl. Julian’s gaze swept over the torn grey shirt and bare feet with undisguised contempt.

"You think hiding out in this forgotten wasteland with these peasants keeps your secrets safe, Marcus?" Julian sneered, taking a slow step toward the porch. "Your father’s empire didn’t just vanish. And neither did the missing millions."

Marcus took a protective step forward, his broad shoulders tensing beneath his ruined shirt. The elderly woman beside him clutched her woven bag tighter, her frail hands trembling as a deep, shadowed look crossed her weathered face. Clara’s breath hitched. She glanced back at Marcus, realizing the man she had just embraced as a brother possessed secrets that reached far beyond this humble dirt floor.

"What is he talking about, Marcus?" Clara asked, her heart hammering against her ribs as she turned to face the bearded man. "Who are you really?"

Marcus looked away, unable to meet her searching eyes. Instead, he reached into the woven bag his mother held and pulled out a heavy, tarnished gold pocket watch, pressing it into Clara’s hands.

"Your father gave this to her the night he disappeared," Marcus whispered.

Clara gasped as she opened the watch to find a hidden compartment containing a folded document bearing her father’s authentic signature, transferring absolute ownership of the entire conglomerate not to Clara, but to the barefoot woman standing before her.
