Chapter 1

Clara stood on the sun-baked earth outside the rustic, mud-brick dwelling, her silk pink dress a stark contrast to the barren dust of the remote valley. Her cream handbag swung from her wrist as she stared at the bearded man standing barefoot before her, his grey shirt torn and stained with weeks of heavy labor. He held an old, scarred wooden bowl out toward an elderly woman who wore a faded brownish dress and clutched a frayed woven bag. Clara’s breath caught in the dry air, her polished shoes sinking slightly into the soil. She looked between the man and the fragile elder standing quietly in the shade of the low porch.

"Is that lady your mother?" Clara asked, her voice soft yet piercing through the quiet tension of the afternoon.

The bearded man didn’t answer immediately. He tightened his grip on the wooden bowl, his knuckles turning pale against the dark grain. His jaw tightened as he looked down at the earth, a muscle jumping in his cheek before he finally raised his tear-shimmered eyes to meet hers.

"Yes, she is my mother," the man said softly, his voice thick with a mixture of exhaustion and fierce, protective pride.

Clara stepped forward, her movements deliberate, and reached out to embrace the elderly woman, whispering words of kinship that transformed the dusty yard into a sanctuary. Yet, as the embrace ended and the warmth settled into the afternoon, a sudden grinding noise broke the stillness. A sleek, black luxury SUV tore down the unmarked dirt road, kicking up a massive cloud of dust that choked the dry air. The vehicle slammed to a halt just inches from Clara’s pristine car.

The rear tinted window rolled down with a sharp mechanical hiss. A sharp-faced man in a tailored Italian suit leaned out, his eyes fixing coldly on the elderly woman holding the woven bag.

"You found her," the man in the suit said, his voice dripping with venom. "And you brought the family curse right to her doorstep."
