Chapter 7 - The Flash in the Dark

The harsh glare of a high-intensity camera flash cut through the dim, smoky atmosphere of the VIP booth like a physical blow. Victoria gasped, shielding her eyes with her forearm, while Marcus Vance sprang to his feet with an explosive curse, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor.
"What the hell is this?" Marcus snarled, lunging toward the velvet curtain.
Standing in the private entrance of the booth was a young man with a familiar, chillingly calm expression. Julian Sterling lowered a professional-grade digital camera, his dark eyes fixed unblinkingly on the terrified pair before him. Behind him stood two burly private investigators in plainclothes, blocking any possible exit from the back of the lounge.
Victoria stared at Julian as if she were looking at a ghost. Her breath hitched, her lungs refusing to draw in air. "You... how did you find us? This booth was booked under an alias!"
"Nothing stays hidden when you’re desperate enough to use a credit card registered to your personal assistant's cousin," Julian replied smoothly, his voice entirely devoid of panic or anger. He raised the camera slightly, reviewing the crystal-clear digital image displayed on the back screen. "Let’s see... a disgraced corporate executive handing a classified master logistics drive to her primary corporate competitor. That ought to make a fascinating exhibit A in federal court tomorrow morning."
Marcus Vance’s face contorted into an ugly snarl. He recovered his composure with chilling speed, forcing a cold, arrogant smirk onto his lips as he straightened his lapels. "You think a photograph proves anything, boy? We were discussing a private investment portfolio over drinks. Possession of a drive doesn't prove espionage unless it’s plugged into a machine. Delete the photo, hand over the camera, and walk away before my security team turns this lounge inside out."
Julian didn't flinch. He simply nodded to the two investigators flanking him. Within a fraction of a second, the larger investigator stepped forward, holding up a small, open leather badge case displaying federal credentials.
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit industrial espionage and receiving stolen corporate property," the investigator stated calmly, clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Vance’s wrists before the rival CEO could even raise his hands to defend himself.
Marcus thrashed against the sudden restraint, his face flushing dark crimson with rage. "You arrogant little bastard!" he screamed, glaring daggers at Julian as he was shoved roughly against the wood-paneled wall. "You think you’ve won? The blueprint Victoria gave you isn't even the real master file! It’s a dead-end decoy programmed to wipe itself the moment it connects to a network!"
Victoria’s head whipped around toward Marcus in sheer, unadulterated horror. She grabbed the black USB drive from the table, staring at it as if it were a venomous snake. "What did you say?" she stammered, her voice shaking violently. "You said you wanted it!"
"I wanted insurance, you stupid cow, not a federal trap!" Marcus spat back, struggling against the cuffs as the investigators dragged him toward the exit.
Julian walked slowly toward the table, looking down at Victoria with a gaze that held neither triumph nor malice—only a profound, crushing disappointment. He reached down and gently picked up the matte-black flash drive from the mahogany surface.
"My mother taught me something very important about people like you, Victoria," Julian said softly, slipping the drive into his breast pocket. "She said that when you back a dishonest person into a corner, you don't even have to push them—they will eagerly dig their own grave just to avoid taking responsibility for their actions."

Victoria collapsed backward onto the leather banquette, her legs losing all ability to support her. The room spun around her as the heavy velvet curtain dropped shut, leaving her entirely alone in the dark.
