Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Luxury

The digital screen of the coordinator’s phone flashed a red recording light, a silent spectator to the public execution of Stephanie’s high-society dreams. Panic finally pierced through her denial, melting away the arrogant composure she had cultivated since stepping out of the limousine.
“You lied to me?” Stephanie hissed, her voice cracking as she took a desperate step forward, grabbing the lapel of his expensive tuxedo. “You told me you inherited your fortune from your shipping magnate grandfather! You let me buy a forty-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown! You let me plan a wedding at the cathedral!”
“I inherited nothing from a grandfather,” Charles corrected coldly, peeling her jeweled fingers away from his chest one by one. “I built logistics software from a garage while working eighty-hour weeks on my mother’s farm to keep the mortgage paid. I wanted a wife who loved the man, not the portfolio. When I tested your patience by pretending to lose my accounts last month, you stayed because you thought a bounce-back was coming. But when you faced a woman who smells like honest labor? Your true self crawled right out of the lace.”
Martha looked up, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. “She’s young, son. Maybe we’re being too harsh.”
“No, Mom,” Charles said firmly, resting a heavy, calloused hand on his mother’s shoulder—a hand that had milked cows at dawn before writing code at midnight. “Character isn’t revealed in moments of convenience. It’s revealed in moments of disgust.”
Stephanie stared at him, her chest heaving beneath the intricate white lace. The realization of what she was losing began to sink in, not just the man, but the penthouse, the black-card status, the relentless stream of designer acquisitions.
“You’re really going to throw this all away over a dirty old lady?” Stephanie shrieked, the mask completely shattering.

Before Charles could answer, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open, and a man in a rumpled tweed suit stepped inside, holding a glowing tablet.
